My System Specs

Default No Video On Cold Boot/After Waking From A Long Sleep

I bought an MSI R9 280X brand new/in box from a HWC member and have had problems with it from day one, but life has been so hectic that I've just dealt with it until now. My system specs are up to date, so click on the link over on the right if you need more info.

Here's some info on what's going on and what has been tried.

- After being shut down for a while or after waking from a long sleep period (usually overnight), the system powers on fine, but there's no video output.

- Connecting to the system remotely shows a low resolution desktop, which indicates to me that the driver either didn't initialize or crashed and couldn't recover.

- Reproduced the problem using the driver that Windows installs by default (13.9, 14.3, or whatever), the latest WHQL driver (14.9), and the latest beta driver (14.9.1), all with the same result.

- Reproduced the problem with all USB devices (keyboard/mouse/external drives) disconnected.

- Restarting the system remotely will fix the problem on rare occasions, but most of the time the system will continue to boot with no video. The same with pressing the reset button.

- The system has been moved from a Carbide Air 240 to the current chassis, and all components have
been reseated, so it shouldn't be a shorting/connectivity problem.

- I'm currently testing with an old 5450 (and have a GTX 750Ti as well) on the off chance that the motherboard is the problem, but with the system booting to a low res desktop, I think I have my answer. So far the 5450 hasn't shown the same problems, but I also haven't left the system off or put it into sleep mode for as long as when the problem occurs.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

-Ryan

Sounds like the MSI 280X is DOA. This has been an annoying problem for a lot of 280X owners. The same thing has happened with the Gigabyte variant. The only thing that I can suggest is to RMA the card, and ensure that you can provide a proof of purchase if MSI requests it.

Thanks Helios. I'll give NCIX a call and get the ball rolling on Monday. Thankfully the card came with a transferable express warranty until 2015. :D

The fact that it's intermittent is what threw me off. Once I manage to get the danged thing to restart properly, it seems fine. Subsequent restarts are fine, but if it's left to sit off again or left in sleep mode for a long time, the problems start up again.

Such a pain.

***EDIT: Tested coming out of sleep mode with the 5450 after sitting overnight without any problems, so you're right on the money, Helios. Thanks for the confirmation.
