Default acessing modem?

I'm using a speedstream 4200 modem, and I want to access the setup function thing to make it automatically connect.

I've tried, these 2 IP's : and, tried plugging straight into the modem (take out the router in the chain) tried accessing it via USB, but nothing seems to work, Bell was no help at all either.. any Idea's? thanks!

im not too familiar with that unit. if it has such functions, look up an online manual. but itsa good idea to keep the router in the chain for the firewall, and such.

usually you dont need the ip of the modem, just create a dsl connection in linux or windows and off you go, if everything is fine.

Bell: Efficient Networks SpeedStream 4200 modem
Configure the modem
  1. Ensure that the modem is connected to the computer.
  2. Click the Start button, then click Internet Explorer.
  3. Type the following address in the Address box at the top of the Internet Explorer window:
  4. On the page that appears, click Setup on the left.
  5. Type the Sympatico user ID and access password and click the Save Settings button.

My System Specs

Another benefit to using a router to connect to the modem is that most have a "keep pppoe connection active" function which will prevent the modem from going offline during idle use times.
