R9 3950X with 16C/32T has been announced by AMD. 3.5 GHz base / 4.7 GHz boosted at $750 USD.

But relatively speaking... you're getting a lot of CPU for that price. Basically an updated Threadripper 2950X for $50-100 less?

If you need the PCI-E lanes then you still need TR but if you are just after core/thread count then the SKU below 2950X just went moot. I'm sure there are use cases that calls for more GPU (dual x16 or quad x8) and more L1 cache but hard to see a Regular Joe going into TR platform. Not sure how this would impact the used TR CPU prices, excluding the WX ones.

biggest dif between TR and this R9 is the cost of motherboard...an X570 is half or just more than half the cost of a TR mobo.

Cheaper boards, more options on coolers etc. 3950X on an iTX board with a great video card would make an amazing almost no compromise small form factor machine.

except that you'd still need an ATX size case to cool the bastard properly!

105W TDP is not really all that high it isn't going to be ridiculous to try and cool this thing, not like then the FX-9XXX series with them easily breaking 200W TDP.
