Default Apple CEO Steve Jobs to Take Medical Leave of Absence

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs, in email to employees, said his health issues are more complex than thought and is taking a medical leave until June.

Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, will take over day-to-day operations, Mr. Jobs said.

Last week, Mr. Jobs announced he had a hormone deficiency that had caused him to dramatically lose weight, but he provided so few details of his condition that it raised new questions about his health.

The CEO's health has been closely scrutinized since a bout with pancreatic cancer in 2004. Mr. Jobs has said the cancer was treated successfully by surgery. However, the health concerns reignited with his noticeable weight loss and plans to skip his traditional address at a major trade show this week.

Last week's disclosure came on the eve of the Macworld trade show, which he had attended every year since 1997. Last month, Mr. Jobs said he wouldn't give the keynote speech at the conference and Apple would no longer participate after this year. At the time, Apple said he wouldn't appear because it was cutting down on trade show activities, but the decision spurred new speculation about Mr. Jobs's health.

Here's the e-mail from Steve Job that he sent out to his whole team

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very
personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my
personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my
family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past
week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I
originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and
to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products,
I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations,
and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a
great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions
while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

It's probably an all-too real possibility. The medical leave gives him enough time for either more bouts with testing or treatments for whatever it might be (If it isn't). And of course taking a leave gives less of a punch to the Apple stock prices, than some drastic and terrible news. Kind of a two fold move.

Default get well

Hopefully it's not a re-occurrence of cancer and he'll get well soon. I do worry though as this is quite a flip from his previous statement which sounded so cavalier.
