Default Using a web cam for surveillance?

Ok, long story short, my little brother is a friggin thief. I've had to get a lock for my room, but I never remember to lock it every time I leave it for work or whatever.
Anyways, I was wondering if there's a program that anyone knows of that would let me use my webcam to record straight to my hard drive for me to watch whenever. Even better if it would only record when it "sees" something move as I've got 500GB of space and that's it. I'm not looking for hi def video, just something so I can prove this little bastard keeps taking my stuff, since my parents think I've misplaced almost $200 in a couple months.
And yes, I'm pissed right now. Hate when I'm losing money, and he wastes it on candy. Anywho, any help would be appreciated, not having much luck here in the search.

What web-cam do you have, some come with software to do exactly what you want. You can try some trial software from this page Free Motion detection software: Download Motion detection
or do a Google search for Motion Detection web-cam software.

The old logitech web cam software came stock with a mode that only recorded when it saw motion and stopped when it didn't anymore.

Perhaps it's still in the new?

Good link TopDog. I was just thinking about this yesterday (video surveillance), as we will be moving soon and I thought this would make a good new house project. Thanks.

Well they also sell network cameras that are more made for security usage. Cost you a bit more though but then you can easily access it remotely (maybe from work if you have a PC?) or it can email you (view email on your phone?) when there's motion detected. I'm fairly sure they have the option to record to a network drive as well.

Something like this: D-Link Wireless G Network Camera

I think lpfan4ever is looking for probably the least expensive route to go and i think network cameras or real security cameras is just an extra or an excessive waste of money for him to spend on to protect just his own room. First and foremost, do you have a webcam already, if you do what model (going to ask these to see if we can find a tailor made solution without spending extra money if its not necessary).

Well, just tested out one of the programs in Top Dog's link. I'm going to go see what it recorded me today and whether or not it's working properly or not.
As for question of the webcam, you're all going to laugh.

It's the webcam for the Xbox 360

Were you able to come to successful conclusion and implementation?
