Default New build, haven't been on here or following PC tech for awhile.

Hey guys,
I'm starting to put together a new rig, it's been a very long time since I've followed new tech and as you can see from my sig, even longer since I've built myself a new pc. The rig in my signature lasted me about 8-9 years until this year. I figured it already had quite a run, and it's time to start fresh!

I will be re-using things like the PS, case, video cards.
I'm hoping the 1 of the 2 GPU setups I have will be ok.

New Build List:
CPU: i5 6660k w/ Corsair H110 closed loop
Mobo: Asus Z170 Deluxe
RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V F4 DDR4 2800mhz 16GB
Storage:
-Samsung Evo 850 256GB
-WD 3GB Red

Existing GPU options:
2 x SLI EVGA Nvidia 560
1 x XFX ATI 5870

Uses for pc:
-Mainly gaming/racing simulators
-Light video editing
-Light photo editing
-Audio editing
-different vector/other design software. light use.

I've read a few things about the new 6600k like the TIM features, etc. but this time around I probably won't need to oc for my purposes.

I was just hoping to get some thoughts, opinions, try to learn anything I haven't read about.

Thanks!

If you are spending that much, you may as well update your GPU as well.

I'll see how it goes. Modern GPU can come later. Usually I opt for something that will last me at least a generation or two .

I know my GPU setups felt bottlenecked by the old rig.

The h110 is pretty massive overkill if your not going to OC, but it should be great nonetheless. You won't go wrong with those choices and it is easy to upgrade GPU later...though newer graphics cards will run circles around what you have.

What res are you playing at? Why skimp out on the video card. Get a R9 380 or R9 270X. Nvidia a 960 or 970 depending on res!!!

I still have an old Samsung 22" LCD max res 1680x1024 iirc. shows how long its been since the previous rig has been down lol

In regards to the h110, it goes on sale every now and then, also I'd like to eventually maybe get into ocing the 6600k if I get bored haha.

I know modern GPU's can run circles around both of those setups, but they'll get me by until I need something more powerful, probably when I get new monitor setup.
For now, I just miss playing games on pc =P

I have the same CPU and last year I upgraded my GPU card to a GTX 770 and it was day and night difference. The video card is the biggest difference for gaming, you'd eventually upgrade the video card so why not do that first and keep using your old rig. I'm even running a 24" at 1920x1200.

Upgrade to a SSD and your old machine is still good for a while..

What will the WD Red be used for?
If you're going to put games on it (which is likely because a 256GB SSD won't have more than an OS and 1-3 modern games), get a 7200 RPM drive like the WD Black 3TB or the Seagata Barracuda 7200RPM 3TB. If it's not going to be powered all day or in RAID, then a WD Green or Seagate Green drive will probably be cheaper than the Red with the same lack-of-performance.

(recall - WD Reds are low-performance NAS drives WD Red Network-Attached Storage - What is NAS? so not ideal for a single drive in a desktop)

Good point, I didn't see that the WD Blacks were still available, had to use the search bar.
I've always had good luck with the WD Blacks.
Requesting to swap out now haha.

Parts have been ordered! Very curious to see how my gpus will hold up with a rig that is a few generations ahead.
