My System Specs

Default Linus Inspired me to build a Home Server

linus's extreme storage build inspired me to do a home server build. i have a 1K power supply, msi nf980-g65 i never used, & as well as a few spare nvidia cards i can use to power it. below are 2 lists of items im planing on as well need advice on. also will windows 7 ultimate power it or do i need a difrent os??? any advice is appreciated, TY in advance.

Planing on Getting:
Norco C-42U 42U Rack Cabinet
NORCO RPC-4020 4U Rackmount Server Chassis w/ 20 Hot-swappable SATA/SAS Drive Bays

Need Advice for:
Raid Card
Slim Optical Drive
SSD Boot Drive
large HDD for raid
Rack surge protector
Rack Internet switch i can connect to wireless router
Rack self for moniker
Rack pull out keyboard shelf

I would think that the first question ould be how many PCs do you want to be able to connect to the server at once, also do you want to connect to it remotely so that you won't need any video cards or sound cards

Depending on what your needs are that list is far beyond what most home people need.

Your list describes what most people setup for a medium-large scaled setup.

SSDs in a server? Useless.
RAID card? Only if you want true hardware raid.

If linus inspired you, then it have to feature white sox in sandals.

Maybe look for the Revo drive for OCZ so you can have a large SSD for swap file and such. I also really recomand samsung 2TB for storage HDD and Samsung slim DVD burner. To my experience they are quieter than many other and have been good to me.
Western digital is also to look at. Unfortunatly HDD price are very high lately :(

Wow...thats similar to the Server we have on our ship....think we have 9 or 10 drives on it with about 12 PC's Networked and maybe 35 users.......you must have a huge house with a ton of PC's ;)

42u 4 post? building a small folding farm? how many other rack servers do you have?

Rack surge protector.... best get a rackmout UPS and power panel that filter/regulate power

would go WiFi if home not wired for lan (in walls)
