i would be a little more selective with the routers than just a particular brand
consumer models - go with something that can handle dd-wrt/tomato - great firmwares that make a router perform as a champ (and always being updated)

now i've also heard about the mikrotik routers being incredible (for a good price)

I think that's a bit beyond for this scenario.

while you are correct, this also show that you don't have to spend a lot to get a router that is leagues beyond the competition

still, dd-wrt/tomato capable router is a good choice
