My System Specs

Default Simple Media Player

Hi all
Im trying to find a simple media player that can play numerous file types from a WD 3TB My Book Drive (with its own Power Supply).
The key is I cant connect it to the internet. I bought a Roku but cant do anything with it once I hit the "Connect to the internet Screen".
Im on a ship with its own dedicated Internet and no ability to connect the Media Player to the outside world.
I have an older WD Media player that will work (as it can function without internet), but wondering what will presently fill my needs and available at Best Buy.???

Any thoughts? Im taking this Roku Ultra back tomorrow (Best Buy Victoria BC)....what about Westek or nvidia ?

the Roku Ultra needs the internet at the start just to install the OS

A Raspberry Pi with Kodi would work. However it sounds like you want something quick and easy.

Ask the geniuses at BB if this will work without internet. https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...10668581.aspx? It has a USB port on it so you should hook up your WD external drive.

I'll take anything that:
1. Can run a WD 3TB HDD (has its own independent power supply) and read various media
2. Doesnt require Internet to operate or for initial set-up.

Its proving to be almost impossible.....everything requires Internet Connection (for initial set-up).....what a pita!!!! The old WD TV Media Player was perfect.....but cant get them anymore!

A laptop? I would imagine you take one with you?

All the Android boxes probably need Internet for the initial setup at least. I think most ask you to log in with a Google account.

Its for the ship...also needs to be small....laptop would be great...but not purchasing a laptop...YES Charlie but because its a purchase for the ship cant really purchase it from you...n\by traditional means.....there has to be something on the Market....what about the Westeks? does the nv Shield require Internet for intitial set-up...(likely)....

What about a simple inexpensive Blueray Player with USB that can handle the Hard Drive.....?

I have a pi3 using libreelecKodi plus some adons it streams decent but it is a hassle hooking up USB harddrive with own power it does work very well the only issue I have was networking it to my PC where all of my main videos are . but if all you are doing is usb harddrive then the pi works well with libreeleckodi it will get pretty hot watching 1080p movies so don't use a case or don't waste money of those stick heat sinks because they dont really do anything lol
