I believe Blizzard was the first to trial this method, actually. They've done it with WOW and D3 for years.

They load low end textures/graphics, and cut out anything that isnt required to run the game. This allows you to play, albeit at a basic user experience level. As the higher end textures download they load in as needed, replacing the low ones.

I think they do it in some MMORPGs from another angle too: loading in starting zones and then further away zones in the background as the player plays.

In those games at least, you have to start at a limited number of places, you spend time in character creation, and then you enter into a series of tutorials. That gives them time to download the farther away areas prior to you reaching them. Clever really.

Just in case people don't know the Steam Summer sale has started. Not sure what I'll get but I'm sure I'll pick up something.

Steam Summer sale started today; though, if my wish-list is any indication, it's another dud.

Yeah most only 25% off with only a few games on my wishlist above 50% off. Not interested as we already pay $80 for a AAA game so 25% off is still $60 for a AAA game. I have enough games to play for right now so I may not even pick anything up. Some games I want aren't even on sale like Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia I was hoping would go on sale as I think it is not worth the price.

Quite a few on my wishlist are on sale for a good amount off but I have a lot of older games on the list, waiting for them to get really cheap. Not a lot of AAA ones on my list currently.

Also, Shadowrun Returns Deluxe version is free from https://www.humblebundle.com/ for a limited time (while supplies last) - Steam key.

Includes:
Shadowrun Returns base game
Shadowrun Returns Anthology DLC
Shadowrun Returns Soundtrack DLC

If you already own Shadowrun Returns, as I did, when you claim it on Steam it just adds the Deluxe DLC to your existing game.

Total War: Warhammer games on sale. The first one is an absolute steal at $25 or whatever is.
HIGHLY recommended if you're a Warhammer fan. Don't even need to be a Total War fan to enjoy them. I'd never touched a Total War game prior, but picked it up as I love the Warhammer universe, and it's one of my most played games.
Super mod friendly too, so if you ever get bored of the base game there are all kinds of overhaul mods. As an example, I think there's a LOTR one out there

Just bought myself PUBG on sale (33% off), since I got some friends who play it and I personally didn't enjoy Fortnite's building aspect or cartoony look
