Default Process Upgrade Thoughts

So with a lot of new titles coming out demanding more from our computers I'm currently running an older X79 setup with a v1 E5-1620 processor.

This processor is a 4 core/8 thread processor with a 10mb L3 cache but I was curious if I could find a inexpensive chip something a long the lines of say a 3xxx series 2011 like a 3930K which has 6 cores/12 threads and a 12mb L3 cache.

I've already overclocked the 1620 to somewhere around the 4.2ghz mark I think and its rock stable, I was just thinking that maybe a newer chip would benefit me to some degree for games and my GTX 1070.

Thoughts? or just leave it.. and no I will not upgrade.

I run my 6-core/12thread CPU at 4.2GHZ and it games pretty well. In BFV, there are times I see 100% CPU usage though, so technically that is also my bottleneck. I don't know if it warrants upgrading though, but those new AMD Ryzens and 9th Gen Intels are mighty tempting!

Maybe I'll run some benchmarks and see what happens during game play.

For gaming, not worth it IMO. Looking at a few old reviews, the 3930k runs similar in games to a 2600k and also fairly similar to your current CPU with the OC. So from that point of view I don't think it would be investing in. Some newer games (well threaded ones) may see some gains, but I don't think it would be worth the $.

E5 1680 V2 maybe?

They seem to command a bit of a premium though and the 3930K linked by Cptn Vortex may do the trick.

Which 9th Gen Intels and why are they tempting?

I just feel that with a cpu like the one you currently have that the relatively small upgrade you are thinking about isn’t really going to make the platform last longer...I know it would be an upgrade, but you will still want something newer. In your shoes I would probably just hold tight for the next Ryzen that will have the first die shrink in a while. Put the money you are thinking about using on this cpu towards it. Obviously that is my opinion.

Unfortunately.. I do not have any funds or money for upgrades nor will it ever be in the budget unless I win the lottery

I am doing what I can with as little as possible to upgrade this. If something like the 3930k gives me a couple more years then that is a cheap investment lol.
