Equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 is the first graphics card capable of rendering in excess of 1 billion pixels per second in today’s titles, unleashing PC game environments of unprecedented size and resolution.1 Enthusiast gamers now have access to a seamless, stunning perspective across six displays, enabling up to 12 times more resolution than 1080p HD.2,3

“The ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition graphics card opens the door to a new era in personal computing,” said Matt Skynner, vice president and general manager, AMD Graphics Division. “With the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition, PC users get the ultimate panoramic computing experience in one powerful card. By bridging the innovation in ATI Eyefinity technology with broad ecosystem support, AMD is revolutionizing the PC visual experience.”

Before today, PC enthusiasts needed two or even three graphics cards to simultaneously drive six independent computer monitors at and beyond 1080p HD resolutions. The ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition delivers that capability in one graphics card, reducing the cost of ownership for a six-screen display while streamlining the ease with which gamers and productivity experts can set up hundreds of possible multi-monitor configurations.

Users can also benefit from a well-developed ecosystem around ATI Eyefinity technology, including broad support by the game development community. Updates in the latest ATI Catalyst™ graphics driver software continue to improve the ATI Eyefinity experience by periodically enabling new features, while a partner program exists to help assist users in identifying ATI Eyefinity-validated components to use in their set-ups.

Features of the new ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition include:

2GB of GDDR5 memory to enable high frame rates and image quality settings in the latest DirectX® 11 games in three- and six-display gaming setups.

Full display flexibility right out of the box, with the inclusion of five adaptors4: two mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapters, two passive mini DisplayPort to DVI dongles, and one passive mini DisplayPort to HDMI dongle.

Support for 3×2 display configuration with new configurations supported in upcoming ATI Catalyst™ software updates.

Broad support for software developers worldwide including Bioware, Codemasters, EA, and Turbine who have adopted ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology in the latest DirectX® 11 games such as DiRT™ 2 from Codemasters and Battlefield Bad Company 2 from EA DICE.

The ability to use ATI CrossFireX™ multi-GPU technology in conjunction with ATI Eyefinity multi-display capabilities as released in ATI Catalyst™ graphics drivers version 10.2, enabling increased gaming performance when driving high-resolution ATI Eyefinity display groups.

ATI Eyefinity technology enhancements were made available in ATI Catalyst™ graphics update version 10.3, including bezel compensation, which helps simulate a more integrated display surface by adjusting for display bezels.5

Contiuning in this pedigree of performance is the HD5870 Matrix. Pretenders, please step aside.

Details of this upcoming monster are sketchy at best, however although it is based upon the HD 5870 platform its internals have all been upgraded. Said to feature better cooling construction, voltage regulation and out of the box clock speeds this monster is sure to impress.

As it stands the core is listed to be 900 MHz and the 2GB of on-board memory running at 1225 Mhz (4900 Effective). Of course that is just to start, considering ASUS will include their VoltageTweak software with this card overclockers should have more than enough tools to put the Matrix through its paces.

Rounding out the design is a back plate akin to the one we see on NVIDIA Cards and a fail safe reset switch should you get carried away or have problems overclocking this card.

Availability and pricing on the Matrix have not yet been announced.

From before the release of the HD 5870, telltale images of Sapphire’s Vapor-X version have been making their way through the internet. Today we have some additional information about this eagerly anticipated product from the world’s largest ATI board partner.

The information we now have points to the Sapphire HD 5870 Vapor-X being loosely based around the reference PCB but it will sport a slightly modified layout while maintaining the usual 11” length. It seems like the core clock gets a minor bump of 20Mhz while the memory moves up from 4.8Gbps to 5Gbps or from 1200Mhz to 1250Mhz. This should result in a claimed 1.1x increase in performance over a stock-clocked HD 5870.

The star of the show however is the massive, full length Vapor-X cooler which adorns this card. It is still a dual slot heatsink but it packs a silent fan which looks to be much more efficient than the one on a reference-based HD 5870 1GB. According to Sapphire’s numbers, their setup will result in an 8.4dBA decrease in noise while the card is under load along with a good 13°C drop in temperatures. Those are some serious claims but judging from our past experiences with Vapor-X technology, it is well within the realm of possibility.

This being the first custom cooled HD 5870 on the market; people are understandably excited for its impending release. Our review will be up in the coming days.

The SAPPHIRE HD 5870 is based on an advanced new graphics architecture from the ATI division of AMD, the second generation of GPU to be built in its 40nm process. This is the very first series of graphics solutions to support the forthcoming DirectX 11, soon to be introduced with Windows7 and supported in Windows Vista.

With a new 150GB/s memory interface supporting fifth generation GDDR5 memory and a new architecture with a total of 1600 stream processors and 80 texture units* the HD 5870 has twice the computing power of the previous generation. It will be lightning fast with existing DirectX 10.1, DirectX 10 and DirectX 9.0 games and applications – but where it excels will be in new releases ofsoftware using DirectX 11 where it will support stunning new levels of detail, transparency and lighting effects. All of this comes with the modest active power consumption of less that 190W – and using Dynamic Power Management the card has a new super low-power idle mode at 27W.

At the same time, SAPPHIRE will introduce the SAPPHIRE HD 5850, with the slightly smaller configuration of 1440 stream processors and 72 texture units offering users access to the same new generation technology and full DirectX 11 support at a lower price point.

Microsoft DirectX 11 includes DirectCompute 11 which allows the graphics architecture to process general purpose calculations and provides programmers and developers with exciting new ways to programme effects that were never possible before. This includes new capabilities for the interaction between transparent objects, new lighting and accelerated post processing effects as well as physics calculations and accelerated video transcoding. Only hardware like the SAPPHIRE HD 5870 and the SAPPHIRE HD 5850 with their true DirectX 11 implementation can support DirectCompute 11 – earlier and competing DirectX 10hardware can only support a subset of these features.

SAPPHIRE graphics cards based on previous generations of ATI hardware have had the ability to perform a type of image enhancement known as Tessellation, but required special programming to implement it. Now DirectX 11 supports Tessellation, and developers can make full use of this feature to dramatically increase the detail in 3D models – on the fly – and deliver spectacular improvements to the detail and realism of images, including characters, objects and scenes displayed using the 6th generation hardware Tessellation engine in the SAPPHIRE HD 5800 series.

Another performance boost in DirectX 11 comes from its improved support for multi-threading. With DirectX 11 the graphics processors can accept data streams from any number of cores in the CPU, unlike DirectX 10 which could only accept data from one CPU core at a time. This accelerates communications with the stream processors in the GPU and dramatically speeds up applications such as Video transcoding and rendering that are supported by ATI Stream technology. The SAPPHIRE HD 5870 has computing power of 2.7 Teraflops (single precision) or 544Gflops (double precision) – the greatest computing capability ever delivered in a single graphics processor.

Like the previous generation, the SAPPHIRE HD 5800 series has an on board hardware UVD (Unified Video decoder) considerably reducing CPU load and delivering smooth decoding of Blu-ray™ and HD DVD content for both VC-1 and H.264 codecs, as well as Mpeg files. In the SAPPHIRE HD 5800 series the UVD has been enhanced to be able simultaneously to decode two 1080p HD video streams and to be able to display HD video in high quality with Windows Aero mode enabled. HDMI capability has also been upgraded to HDMI 1.3a with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

In addition to spectacular image clarity, speed and visual effects, the SAPPHIRE HD 5800 series supports a new multi-monitor mode known as Eyefinity. This allows a single GPU to display a choice of images over an array of several monitors. The standard card supports up to three monitors, with a resolution of up to 7680 x 1600. Special editions will support up to six monitors from a singlegraphics card. This new feature does not constrain the monitor configuration to be in a linear or rectangular array. L-shaped and T-shaped configurations are allowed, opening up exciting possibilities not just for multi-screen gaming, but also for information systems, multimedia systems and promotional displays.

The SAPPHIRE HD 5800 series is supported by AMD’s DirectX 11 WHQL certified graphics driver which delivers support for all of the key DirectX 11 level features required for new gaming experiences and acceleration of next generation high performance applications.

The SAPPHIRE HD 5870 and HD 5850 standard editions are shipping from 23rd September. Full retail editions of the HD 5870 will include a coupon for Dirt2 – the PC version of this exciting driving game which has full DirectX 11 support – as well as BATTLESTATIONS PACIFIC. SAPPHIRE plans to introduce special editions with enhanced cooling solutions and different memory configurations in the coming weeks.

With the rumoured launch date less than a week away (September 23rd, 2009), anticipation is building for ATI’s next generation of cards. As such, holes have been poked in ATI’s attempt to keep a tight ball on their paper launch, and leak’s have been developing rapidly in the past few weeks.

Today, we finally get to see the final product, as what appears to be a retail sample of the cards from an unknown company has popped up at Hermitage Akihabara.

Unlike the initial photos in our first report that featured a solid black cooler with red stripe, the retail products from an unknown company sport the typical CGI female and red pin stripe, on a very block like cooler. Both the HD 5870 and HD 5850 have been pictured.

From the images, rough eyeball estimates seem to indicate that the dimensions of the 5870 will be pushing the envelope of 10.5 inches, while the 5850 will be roughly the same size as the 4870 at 9.5″

At “experience events” on three continents this week, AMD and its industry partners introduced ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology, a revolutionary feature in the upcoming next generation ATI Radeon family of DirectX 11 enabled graphics processors.

This unique AMD innovation gives PCs the ability toseamlessly connect up to six ultra high definition displays in a variety of portrait and landscapeconfigurations giving viewers a stunning new perspective on their PC experience. ATI Eyefinity is powered by one AMD graphics card for up to 12 times 1080p high-definition resolution, which approaches eye-definition optical clarity.1

ATI Eyefinity technology brings AMD closer to delivering true eye-definition experiences, where the display of a virtual environment is so detailed that it seems optically real to the human eye. Using ATI Eyefinity technology in a single PC, it is now possible to power displays with a combined theoretical resolution of 268 megapixels,2 roughly equivalent to the resolution of a 90 degree arc of what the human eye sees.3 For reference, today’s average 19 inch LCD display typically has an image quality of only slightly more than 1 megapixel.4

PCs with ATI Eyefinity technology expand game and virtual world environments to the largest ever experienced, allowing gamers to dominate the competition. For entertainment, education, and productivity applications, ATI Eyefinity practically obsoletes scrolling through vast desktop real estate that puts more information and stunning detail at users’ fingertips.

AMD is working closely with leading display partner Samsung Electronics to introduce ultra-thin bezel monitors and compatible stands that can easily be tiled to create an even more immersive and virtually seamless ATI Eyefinity experience. The ultra-thin bezels will enable customers to create their own scalable display matrix. Samsung is the first to bring these displays to market.

A More Engaging PC Experience: Eye-Definition Gaming

Set to debut in retail and e-tail outlets before the Windows® 7 operating system is launched, the next generation ATI Radeon family of graphics processors is set to bring computer enthusiasts and mainstream consumers the benefits of the most powerful processor ever created.5 To showcase the new experiences next generation ATI Radeon graphics will bring to PC users, AMD presented:

PCs armed with the new ATI Radeon processors, capable of rendering incredibly complex virtual environments andcharacters unlike anything seen before.

Scenes and digital actors that are almost indistinguishable from reality, rendered in real-time and shown as completely interactive.

A More Intuitive PC Experience: Making Things Simple

Further demonstrating the power of its approach to the market, AMD demonstrated how this new technology will work within AMD PC platforms to provide consumers a more intuitive experience. For example:

AMD spotlighted the conversion of a home video file for use on a personal media player in Windows 7. The technology preview showed the potential of notebooks and PCs powered by new ATI Radeon graphics processors, where users simply drag a file like an HD video produced by popular pocket cameras, and an easy, visibly accelerated conversion of the file takes place.6

The speed and intuitiveness of this popular processing-intensive task is unmatched by all-Intel platform offerings costing much more.

A More Empowering End-to-End PC Experience

ATI Eyefinity technology and the next generation family of ATI Radeon graphics processors were introduced as a part of a series of vivid demonstrations showing the next act for the PC: a total experience transformation from the moment consumers walk into a store, to easier access to advanced video processing, to the quality of entertainment experience new PCs deliver in the home or on the go.

Additional groundbreaking new technologies and concepts were also introduced by AMD and industry-leading partners:

The AMD Next Generation Notebook Platform and the AMD Second Generation Ultrathin Platform for Notebooks also launched this morning, with a multitude of innovative OEM notebook designs on display. Notebooks based on the two platforms were shown to clearly demonstrate a superior visual entertainment experience — allowing consumers to enjoy HD videos on HD-capable panels, games and the Windows® 7 operating system, all at their best, on the go.

These new notebook platforms and upcoming graphics technologies are the technological foundation for a new consumer merchandising campaign called VISION Technology from AMD, also announced today. The campaign is designed to make it easier for consumers to make informed PC buying decisions based on entertainment- and social networking-intensive customizations for the way PCs are used today, succeeding the outmoded industry approach of primarily emphasizing one part inside the PC. In mock retail settings at the “experience events,” AMD brought this new retail experience to life for its business partners across retail, OEMs, software providers, news media, industry analysts, and online communities.

Their new DirectX11 HD 5870 and 5850 are being eagerly anticipated by consumers as the HD 4000 series is starting to show its age – now being year old technology. With the HD 4870X2 discontinued, it leaves only the modest mid range HD 4890 as ATI’s top card of the line, giving nVidia exclusive control of the the top end.

According to sources at gathering.tweakers.net and alienbabeltech.com the card is a serious power horse, being able to compete with current dual GPU cards! It is manufactured on the 40nm process and said to boast 1600 Stream processors, double the current HD 4890.

Alienbabeltech expands on this, ”Amazingly AMD doubled the number of SIMD units from 10 to 20. Since each SIMD unit contains 16 5-D units and a Quad-TMU overall, that means we count 1600 stream processors and 80 TMUs. We are talking about a new videocard whose core speed is at 850 MHz and whose 256-bit GDDR5 runs at 1200 MHz“. There will likely be both 1GB and 2GB variants

As the photos show, the monster also includes 3 unique video output options, including DVI, HDMI and Display port. Here is where another cool feature crops up, claimed as “Eyefinity” said to support up to triple displays at 2560X1600 each, with the most powerful models claimed to support up to six!

All of this is said to pull less than 190watts at full load. And what will all of this set you back? Supposedly less than $399.

The little sibling, the HD 5850 also looks very promising with 1440 SP’s and a clock speed of 700/1000. It is expected to be released with a $299 price tag. To round out the lineup is the HD 5870X2, dual GPU variant, is expected to be announced around October 20th, 2009 and will be the flagship card, doubling up on all the 5870′s features, and expected to be slapped with a sticker price of $599.

Please keep in mind that all information and photos should be regarded as rumours, however the sources do quote “trusted sources” and have some pretty convincing evidence.
