While AMD opted to keep the ATI brand name after the buyout in 2006, it is finally time to wave farewell to the iconic trademark and accept its green overlord.

NVIDIA and Intel will now be competing directly with AMD branded graphics as the move merges all future products under one company banner. The transition however will not do away with the specific line names introduced by ATI, such as “Radeon” and “FirePro”, in fact it appears that even more effort will be placed on marketing the brand names.

While all current items will still be sold under ATI, going forward all technology and products will introduce the AMD name. The company claims that much of the move was based around research pointing to better consumer awareness of the AMD brand, versus the ATI name as well as ideal timing given the focus on AMD Fusion, CPU-GPU products and the settlement of recent legal disputes.

Corporate PR slides provided by AMD shed more light on the decision.

ATI’s lack of anti aliasing support for StarCraft II has been well publicized but official responses to the situation were few and far between. We now have what we have been waiting for: clarification.

As some of you may know, in our StarCraft II GPU Comparison we noted that Blizzard will not be including an optional anti aliasing (AA) setting in the retail version of their new game. NVIDIA decided to leap forth into the AA pool right off the bat by including an override option within their Control Panel but the result was a significant performance impact in-game. Nonetheless, the option was there. ATI didn’t follow suit for reasons we will see below.

Before the GPU comparison article went live, we asked ATI for a statement and while we received a “we’re looking into it” at the time, they have since clarified their position. We won’t editorialize here in any way and let you draw your own conclusions.

AMD constantly strives to deliver great gaming experiences for our customers and the upcoming launch of Starcraft II is no exception. Blizzard’s focus on incredible game play for all, means that gamers using ATI Radeon(tm) products can enjoy smooth HD gameplay and industry leading image quality with our current generation of ATI Radeon products as well as many of our past generation cards.

In discussions during the development of StarCraft II, Blizzard indicated that they would not initially include options to set levels of in-game anti-aliasing (“AA”). This meant that support for AA within StarCraft II would only be made possible by including it in the driver, an approach that could significantly impact performance.

Some third party reviews of the Starcraft II beta echo our concerns that AA can cause gameplay impairment. In these reviews, the third parties found that 4x AA led to a reduction in fps rendering at lower screen resolutions, which only became more noticeable at larger resolutions.

After evaluating our options, our engineering team opted not to provide AA support for StarCraft II within the Catalyst Control Center, even though the competition has included AA support in their driver at launch.

We are committed to making AA perform at an acceptable level before we release it to our customers. We will continue to work with Blizzard on this matter and hope to offer our customers an acceptable AA solution at a later date.

AMD announced today the launch of the first of a new family of ATI FirePro professional graphics solutions with ATI Eyefinity technology, delivering clear performance advances and productivity leadership. The ATI FirePro V8800—the industry’s most powerful professional graphics card ever created and the only professional graphics solution in the world supporting ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology and Microsoft DirectX 11 technology—is available for order today from AMD and its technology partners.

“AMD is the undisputed consumer graphics leader and today we’re bringing many of the same cutting edge innovations from our ATI Radeon HD 5000 series to the professional graphics market for the first time. The ATI FirePro V8800 with ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology effectively dissolves visual limitations for professionals,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, AMD Products Group. “Our ecosystem has never been stronger as we’re actively working with leading ISVs and OEMs on a global scale to offer unprecedented choice and advanced performance for handling today’s modern workloads. We’re confident the latest family of ATI FirePro professional graphics brings new value to the workstation graphics market.”

The ATI FirePro V8800 is an affordable (MSRP $1499 USD) and powerful solution, delivering 2.6 teraflops of raw computing power with the highest memory bandwidth (147.2 GB/s) available in any single-card professional graphics solution ─ more than two times the compute power of the previous generation ─ making it the ideal solution for manipulating large and complex photorealistic models in real-time. In the coming months AMD plans to round out its next-generation ATI FirePro family, offering a number of solutions to meet the various 2D and 3D needs of professionals working in CAD, Digital Content Creation (DCC), Broadcast, Medical Imaging and Financial Services.

ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology
With ATI Eyefinity technology, professionals can use up to 2x the screen workspace with a single card and increase productivity. Three and four display desktop configurations are simple to enable with the ATI FirePro V8800 – users only need to connect the additional displays to the graphics card.

* See more: with one ATI FirePro V8800 users can drive up to four independent 30″ displays, enabling 16.4 million pixels in vivid color detail for a truly immersive environment.
* Expansive desktop space: manage multitasking more efficiently, and view more designs, applications and images at once.
* Speedy workflows: avoid time-wasting application-switching, window-sorting, mouse-clicking and scrolling.
* Single desktop: support for an intuitive Graphical User Interface allows configuration of a single desktop surface across multiple displays.
* Synchronized outputs: ATI Eyefinity technology works seamlessly with ATI FirePro™ S400 Synchronization Module, enabling up to four displays per graphics card to be synchronized at a time.

Support for industry standardsNext generation ATI FirePro professional graphics are designed for and ready to support leading industry standard application interfaces, including OpenGL, OpenCL and DirectX 11.

* Released by the Khronos Group in March, OpenGL 4.0 includes a new tessellation feature that allows applications to amplify geometry, generating tessellated geometry based on incoming vertices and allowing professionals to take a rough object defined by only a few vertices and generate new vertices to smooth out the object and provide more detail. AMD has announced its support for OpenGL through its beta driver for OpenGL 4.0 and 3.3.
* OpenGL 4.0 also further improves the close interoperability with the OpenCL industry standard for accelerating computationally or visually intensive applications.
* Next-generation ATI FirePro professional graphics are designed to accelerate OpenCL 1.0. Support for OpenCL 1.0 is available through AMD’s ATI Stream software development kit, which allows developers access to both AMD GPU and x86 CPU processors in a workstation or PC.
* The latest generation of ATI FirePro professional graphics is hardware compliant with DirectX 11, and ATI FirePro V8800 is the only professional graphics solution capable of supporting DirectCompute 11 today.

As the developer community looks to harness the power and performance associated with heterogeneous architectures, industry standards are needed for developing applications capable of running on all of the available processors in a system. Video is a highly data parallel application and AMD is actively collaborating with consumer and commercial software partners to accelerate transcoding. AMD regularly collaborates with middleware and other video codec providers, such as MainConcept, to help them take advantage of GPU acceleration technologies enabled by AMD’s ATI Stream technology and the OpenCL standard.

Assuring reliability
AMD works closely with leading application providers to optimize ATI FirePro professional graphics, and ATI FirePro professional graphics have been certified on more than 90 applications.

* All ATI FirePro professional graphics are tested against a battery of simulations and real-world scenarios to ensure compatibility and stability.
* AMD also issues regular updates to its unified driver, delivering performance improvements, enhanced features and support across the ATI FirePro family.

Company Press Release:

AMD today announced several new ATI Catalyst graphics driver features designed to enable higher performance, industry-leading stability and an even more intuitive computing experience for ATI Radeon graphics customers. Two ATI Catalyst driver updates unlock the new features, the first coming today in ATI Catalyst update, version 10.2, and the second scheduled for release in March. The releases represent AMD’s ongoing commitment to providing regular driver updates focusing on stability, performance and innovation for users of ATI Radeon graphics processors.

“As the first and, to date, only company to provide DirectX 11 technology and ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology, AMD continues to demonstrate our commitment to innovation in graphics,” said Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice-president, Software, AMD. “Our monthly ATI Catalyst driver updates further illustrate that commitment as we focus on continually enabling greater performance, even more rock solid stability, and intuitive, innovative features.”

“The visual experience delivered by today’s personal computers is made possible as much by the driver software layer as it is by the tremendous feature set and performance of the latest graphics cards”, said Jon Peddie, founder, Jon Peddie Research. “The AMD Graphics Division has internalized this and has created a centre of excellence around driver updates, bringing customers monthly improvements and features in addition to added stability and performance.”

Key features of ATI Catalyst graphics drivers, version 10.2:

Better game performance, sooner: Game profiles help optimize performance so that gamers get an amazing experience. AMD is focusing its efforts to provide access to game profiles when a new game launches – often on the day of launch – and AMD plans to post a separate executable file on AMD.com that users can install to get access to the latest application profiles for improved performance.

More powerful panoramic gaming with ATI CrossFireX technology: Fans of ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology can now take advantage of the additional graphics horsepower to help increase game performance or image quality settings when using ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology.

Key features of ATI Catalyst graphics drivers, version 10.3, scheduled for release in March, 2010:

Monthly updates for the mobile crowd: Starting in March, AMD plans to issue stability, performance and feature enhancements in monthly ATI Catalyst driver updates for Windows 7 and Windows Vista-based notebooks that feature ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2000, HD 3000, HD 4000 and HD 5000 series premium graphics processors. AMD is working closely with most major notebook manufacturers to ensure broad support for this initiative.

ATI Eyefinity technology, made better: To further enhance the immersive visual experience of ATI Eyefinity technology, users will now have access to an easy-to-use wizard that will allow them to adjust their display layout to compensate for monitor bezels. In addition, users will be able to adjust the brightness, color and contrast for each individual monitor for greater customization and calibration of each screen in their ATI Eyefinity set-up.

Enabling the 3D ecosystem: AMD is enabling third-party middleware vendors to bring more 3D stereoscopic gaming options to consumers by allowing for independent left and right images at 120 Hz.

ATI Catalyst 10.2 will be released later today, Catalyst 10.3 in March 2010.

A sleek, energy efficient PC based on ATI Radeon HD 5570 graphics, combined with new AMD Phenom II X4 905e processors at 65W and AMD 7-series chipsets, can power immersive gaming and vivid digital entertainment. These platforms are an excellent choice for system builders and home theater enthusiasts seeking Eye-Definition entertainment.

Their latest focus is on the lower end of the market with the Cedar core featured on the rumoured HD 5450 and HD 5500 series. The HD 5450 has been prematurely listed on an international retailer’s website, divulging the specs of an MSI branded card.

The card is intended for the low end and media centre environment with 80 stream processors, core speed of 650MHz, 1 GB of GDDR3 memory at 1600MHz and a 64-bit memory interface.

It has a passive heatsink, and connections include DVI, VGA and HDMI. Pricing from the Latvian retailer is listed at 44.76 LVL (Latvian Lats) or roughly $87 USD.

The HD 5450 has also been found on auction website EBAY listed at a Buy It Now price of $62.99 USD, however it has only half the memory with 512MB GDDR3.

ATI is expected to officially announce the release of the card in early February.

The ATI Radeon HD 5830 is poised to come in under the $200 price range to offer a very affordable DX11 capable gaming experience to users not wanting to drop the coin on the $300 and above cards.

This gap is currently occupied by the previous generation HD 4890 which will most likely be phased out with the HD 5830′s introduction.

Not much is know about the specs of this rumoured addition, but it is highly likely it will be based on the 40nm Cypress series GPU, featuring GDDR5 with a 256bit bus like the other HD 5800′s. Details such as shader’s and clock speed are still unclear but we will be sure to report it when new information comes to light.

The reported official launch date is set for January 25th

At the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), AMD announced the shipment of its two millionth DirectX 11-capable graphics processor to its technology partners, cementing AMD graphics as the standard for DirectX 11 computing. This millions-shipped milestone comes just three months after the launch of the ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 series, the first DirectX 11-capable graphics products from AMD. The fast pace with which AMD delivered two million next-generation GPUs is a result of an aggressive execution of the AMD “Sweet Spot” graphics strategy which positioned the company to more rapidly bring DirectX 11 products to market across high-volume segments and popular price points, in combination with the positive reception of AMD’s DirectX 11-capable graphics technology from PC users worldwide.

“Today’s milestone underscores the ingenuity and innovation that AMD poured into the DirectX 11-capable ATI Radeon™ Premium Graphics products,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, Products Group, AMD. “Fifteen weeks ago we introduced the ATI Radeon™ HD 5800 series graphics cards to the world, the first to support DirectX 11 and powerful capabilities like ATI Eyefinity multi-display technology, with support for Direct Compute 11. Over the course of the last few months, we’ve shipped tens of thousands of DirectX 11-capable graphics processors a week to technology partners who in turn put them into consumers’ hands. With this week’s introduction of the DirectX 11-capable notebook counterparts to our desktop family in the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5000 series, an even larger base of users will enjoy the best visual computing experience available today.”

“Being first to market with new technology and initiatives gives a company a strong lead, and if properly managed, a sustainable advantage,” said Dr. Jon Peddie, founder and president, Jon Peddie Research. “AMD has been first to market with DirectX 11 graphics products, and as a result, all of the new DirectX 11 games have used those products as the basis for their development. This gives AMD a substantial advantage.”

A report from Fudzilla indicates that the situation over the yields of 40nm production are unlikely to improve anytime in the near future. Currently production is sitting at approximately 50%, which is pitiful for a process that has been in production for nearly a year. It is indicated, that by this point in time, successful production should be sitting at nearly 90%.

TSMC had stated it would resolve the issues by the end of this quarter (Q4 2009), clearly an empty promise, and they now expect that the shortage will carry through until at least Q1 of 2010.

Currently ATI is the only company with a heavy reliance on 40nm chips for a retail product (their 5800 series), however NVIDIA is rumoured to be launching their Fermi based graphics cards (also manufactured on the 40nm process) in early 2010 as well; placing even more strain on the clearly over burdened manufacturing sector.

What this means for consumers, is an unlikely end to the extreme shortage of the ATI 5800 series video cards – arguably the most in demand GPU on the market – any time before April of next year. Along with this, those holding out for NVIDIA to play its hand, may also be in for disappointment regarding stock levels when the retail release rolls around.

Reports around the web have picked up on a very small little piece if code in the latest OpenCL 1.1 drivers released with the ATI Steam SDK 2.0 beta yesterday. Amidst strings of instruction code, along with the HD 5700 & 5800 series, is listed support for the “ATI Radeon HD 5900 Series”.

“EG CEDAR” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68E8
“EG CEDAR ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68E9
“EG CEDAR ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68F8
“EG CEDAR ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68F9
“EG CEDAR ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68FE
“EG REDWOOD” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68C8
“EG REDWOOD ” = ati2mtag_Evergreen, PCIVEN_1002&DEV_68DE

This “5900 Series” is likely to be the name for what has commonly been referred to as “Hemlock” , the dual Cypress cards seemingly mislabelled as 5870X2 and 5850X2 pictured here. The cards are rumoured to receive the labels of HD 5970 and HD 5950. The script also alludes to the Juniper chip offshoots, Redwood and Cedar, which clearly are not yet progressed enough to be titled.

We have shown that the cards are in fact real and in the final stages of development, but ATI appears to be holding back in order to see what NVIDIA has in store, and counter Fermi closer to its release. If you looked at the benchmarks and thought the 5870 was powerful, well “you ain’t seen nothing yet”.

The cards are the first of the 40nm Juniper lineup, boasting an impressive 1.04 billion transistors and come in a 512MB or 1GB GDDR5 variant with 128-bit memory bus. The HD 5750 features 720 stream processors and clocks speeds of 700MHz core and 1150MHz memory. Both cards have impressively low power consumption, being claimed at a max of 18W idle and a 108w at full load.

ATI has also include their new Eyefinity technology for both cards, making them a great low cost solution for users simply want to utilize this feature. The cards will allow for connection of three monitors of up to a 2560×1600 resolution, stitching them into a single display.

The cards are currently available on many retailer shelves for a price of $159 USD for the HD 5770 and $129 or $109 for the HD 5750 1GB and 512MB versions respectively.

A member of Chinese website MyMyPC, put an Asus HD 5770 to the test, and ran it through a variety of benchmarks. The test system used was an AMD Phenom II X4 945 with 4 GB of DDR3 memory operating on Windows 7 64-bit. While strangely, the CPU-Z screenshots in the photo show the CPU running at a touch over 800MHz, the results line up with where most analysts have put the cards performance.

Overall the numbers look very promising, lumping the card in with the NVIDIA GTX 260 & 275, and ATI’s Radeon HD 4890, it keeps exactly in line with all of them in 3DMark06, and only slightly lags behind the GTX 275 & HD4890 in 3DMark Vantage.

The expected release day is rumoured to stumbled around by the end of October making for quite the successful fall and holiday season lineup for ATI… and what is likely to be a very bleak Christmas for NVIDIA.

It would be safe to assume that the official announcement is close, but pictures of the ATI Radeon HD 5770, a graphics card targeted for mainstream users, has be captured and released a tad early.

The card is a part of the Evergreen family, codenamed Juniper and based on the same 40nm technology found in the HD 5800 series lineup. The card is slightly less powerful with 1120 Stream Processors, a core frequency of 825 MHz and 1GB of GDDR5 memory running at 4600 MHz with a 128-bit memory interface. The card supports both DirectX 11 and CrossFireX.

While the length has been shortened considerably from the 11″ monster of the HD 5870, it still has a dual slot cooler and on the back retains the dual DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. Keeping the DisplayPort option makes this an excellent choice for regular workstation or budget users wanting utilize the triple monitor capabilities, but not play or only do only modest gaming.

The card was also captured posted for sale at a European retailer for 149.99 euro’s, with a VAT of 19%, meaning that we can almost guarantee that the expected North American retail price with be under the $200 price point.

ATI’s fans cried foul, and this was backed by ATI’s Ian McNaughton in his company blog post, with claims that due to NVIDIA’s backing of the game “the in-game AA option was removed when ATI cards are detected” thus causing unfair results when benchmarked and limiting the owners of ATI graphics cards to poorer visuals.

This was confirmed by AMD testing through alterting the game to not detect ATI id’s: “By tricking the application, we were able to get in-game AA option where our performance was significantly enhanced. This option is not available for the retail game as there is a secure rom.”

AA is not completely unavailable to ATI users however, it can be enabled and controlled through the Catalyst Control centre. “The advantage of in-game AA is that the engine can run AA selectively on scenes whereas Forced AA in CCC is required to use brute force to apply AA on every scene and object, requiring much more work.” says Ian McNaughton.

The game was developed under NVIDIA’s “The Way It’s Meant to Be Played” title and the developers chose to take advantage of NVIDIA’s PhysX and 3D Vision technology, so there is some optimization, however NVIDIA vehemently denies using its clout to purposefully shut out ATI users from the full experience. Instead they call to attention ATI’s lack of foresight in optimizing and being prepared for one of the year’s biggest titles, stating that AMD is the one who left their own customers stranded.

With such harsh accuations by ATI being put forward, Hardware Canucks contacted NVIDIA to see if we could get a response to the dispute. NVIDIA replied with a statement that may shed some light on the matter, and calls out to AMD to get on the ball with emerging technologies and game development.

“A representative of AMD recently claimed that NVIDIA interfered with anti-aliasing (AA) support for Batman: Arkham Asylum on AMD cards. They also claimed that NVIDIA’s The Way It’s Meant to be Played Program prevents AMD from working with developers for those games.

Both of these claims are NOT true. Batman is based on the Unreal Engine 3, which does not natively support anti-aliasing. We worked closely with Eidos to add AA and QA the feature on GeForce. Nothing prevented AMD from doing the same thing.

Games in The Way It’s Meant to be Played are not exclusive to NVIDIA. AMD can also contact developers and work with them.

We are proud of the work we do in The Way It’s Meant to be Played. We work hard to deliver kickass, game-changing features in PC games like PhysX, AA, and 3D Vision for games like Batman. If AMD wants to deliver innovation for PC games then we encourage them to roll up their sleeves and do the same.”

Those lucky few owners of ATI’s new Radeon HD 5800 series video cards, may find themselves in a bit of a bind if trying to install the latest Catalyst 9.9 drivers, as it does not officially support the Cypress series chips yet.

As such, this morning AMD has opened up a hotfixed driver package to the public, to tide owners over until the release of the Catalyst 9.10 which should bring full compatibility under one driver. The fix is intended for Vista and Windows 7, available in both 32bit and 64bit flavours. It supports both the HD 5870 and HD 5850

It can be downloaded directly from AMD here:
