Sources at OCWorkbench claim that ASRock is looking to keep the heart of Socket 939 – replaced by AM2 in 2006 – still beating with a new motherboard based on the 785G chipset.

The 939A785GMH128M retains some of the features of the 785G chipset, such as integrated DX10 Radeon 4200 video and PCIe x16 2.0 with Hybrid Crossfire support, but supports only DDR memory. It also has the latest media outputs including HDMI and Optical Audio out.

Obviously the company is aiming to encourage consumers to recycle old hardware into a perfectly capable home theatre system, but with the explosion of incredbly cheap AMD dual core CPU’s and sub $100 Quad Cores, it does seem a little strange.

Another mATX 785G, this time by Asus, is a little different as it is based on support for AM2+ CPU’s, rather than the new AM3 format. This limits it to the use of four DDR2 DIMM’s at supported speeds of 1200MHz. It boasts an onboard RV620 based IGP (HD4200) through DVI, VGA and HDMI which will work for smooth HD video playback using the UVD 2.0 Video decoder, as well as Hybrid Crossfire. Using the SB710 southbridge there is support for 5 SATA II Ports, and a sixth offered through eSATA, 12XUSB connections. The new platform, codenamed Pisces is toted to be able to easily outstripe the previous 780G generation, as well as combinations from competitors nVidia and Intel.
