Consumers in an otherwise unremarkable city in the mid-west United States now have some of the world’s fastest Internet connections, thanks to the launch of Google Fiber today.
Available in Kansas City, Google Fiber offers 1Gbps download and upload speeds with no data cap for $120 per month in a package that also includes fiber T.V service (or $70/month sans-T.V). The service also includes 1TB of storage on Google Drive.
With the $300 installation cost, consumers will receive a Nexus 7 tablet to act as a remote as well as a DVR with a 2TB hard drive.
At a press conference in announcing the launch of Google Fiber, Google reps on stage ran speed tests comparing Google Fiber to standard broadband networks showing that Google Fiber had download speed and upload speeds of around 937Mbps — or just under 1Gbps. The Google Fiber connection managed to upload a test file at 784Mbps.
“Even though the Internet was invented here, other countries have sped ahead and their citizens enjoy much faster speeds,” Google vice president of access services Milo Medin said.“You don’t have to settle for old-style television anymore. It’s not just Internet and it’s not just TV: It’s Google Fiber.”
