Following in the footsteps of many of ATI’s other board partners, XFX will be looking to launch a single slot HD 5770 1GB card in the following weeks.
The NVIDIA soon introducing a card which will act as a direct competitor to the HD 5770, ATI’s board partners are have been searching for ways to make their 10 month old products maintain the public’s interest. To this end, several will be launching single slot HD 5770 cards in the near future. The goal of these isn’t necessarily to appeal to the enthusiast mindset but rather to bring high performance to a smaller form factor. Since the Juniper XT core produces a fraction of the power of higher end cards, it is a prime candidate for this single slot treatment.
XFX is following in the footsteps of their competitors with their own single slot HD 5770 1GB. Judging from the pictures alone, we’re hoping it will be a relatively quiet card as well since it does seem to sport a rather large fan. Otherwise, clock speeds will likely run the gamut as XFX has been known to release pre-overclocked versions of their products.
Expect a review in the next few days.

It would be nice to see even the top end cards go to single slot which would allow better cooling by having more space between in xfire and sli configurations.

That may be so, but with more room for air to circulate between the cards, this should assist the cooling. I'm sure they would consider that when designing these cards, including a more aggressive fan, more power efficient, better heatsinks,...

Still, you have a point and it's something to consider.

I'm quite certain that GPU manufacturers would already be using single-slot coolers on their cards if they found it to be beneficial.

This should be great for people making LAN boxes. Leaves more room for more components

The biggest ups I can see for single slot cards is for matx boards where a dual slot card covers up your only pci slot, and for people who want to run 4x GPUs. with single slots, you can run 4 GPUs in a case that only has the normal 7 slots. Although, if you are running quad gpus, you are probably running the latest/greatest.
