On yesterday’s bombshell that XFX was pulling out of the high end NVIDIA GPU race, leaked mock ups of a redesigned XFX HD 5970 4GB Black Edition have surfaced.
The new beast has adapted the stock cooler to take some unique design ques from a sub-machine gun as shown in the CGI drawing. The reports also indicate that the card will be released in a box styled as the weapon, with the card loaded into the magazine slot. Definitely a whole new level of marketing.
The HD 5970 Black Edition is said to be dual AMD Cypress GPUs complete with 3200 stream processors, 4 GB of GDDR5 memory across the two 256-bit memory interfaces, and with core & memory speeds matching that of the 5870. The card will be released in a limited run and expected street price is around $1000.
“XFX have always developed the most powerful, versatile Gaming weapons in the world – and have just stepped up to the gaming plate and launched something spectacular that may well literally blow the current NVIDIA offerings clean away,” said XFX, in a statement to Nordic Hardware. “GTX480 and GTX470 are upon us, but perhaps the time has come to Ferm up who really has the big Guns.”
One thing’s for sure, you wouldn’t want to be the truck driver transporting these across a border checkpoint.
