NVIDIA’s GameStream wireless ecosystem requires a specific but expanding set of components. Now it will be easier to find the right hardware.
The GameStream ecosystem is, at face value, relatively straightforward. At the most basic level it consists of a GeForce-powered PC and a secondary wireless device like NVIDIA’s excellent SHIELD or a Tegra-powered tablet. These once-disparate products are melded together over a high speed wireless network so the PC can do the heavy processing and effectively stream a game or application to a handheld device. This allows gamers to play many PC titles (there are over 50 supported right now) right into the palm of their hand.
SHIELD is an integral part of this equation, especially considering it can output a 1080P signal to your TV and act as a quasi-console when hooked up to a wireless controller. However there are plenty of other GameStream-compatible items already out there or on the horizon. TVs, set-top boxes, USB WiFi dongles, Miracast modules, game controllers and other accessories will all be making their way onto the market as NVIDIA broadens their already-popular platform.
One of the key facilitators in a GameStream setup is the wireless router but finding one with the necessary features and signal stability isn’t easy. Granted, any router will work but you’ll need a higher end dual band unit to ensure the very specific requirements for fluid OTA streaming. Many found themselves asking “is my router compatible?”
The GameStream-Ready moniker is an effort to make finding compatible components easier, eliminating a sometimes-fruitless search for specific requirements. This is an important step for a relatively new ecosystem, particularly as NVIDIA strives to roll out their cloud based GRID into the GameStream fold.
For the time being NVIDIA has set up a GameStream Ready section http://shield.nvidia.com/accessories-hardware/ on the SHIELD microsite which lists the somewhat limited (yet expanding) selection of certified components. We also expect to see manufacturers begin featuring the necessary designations alongside their approved products.
Right now, the following items are listed as being GameStream Ready:
Buffalo AirStation Extreme AC 1750
Buffalo AirStation Extreme AC 1200
D-Link DIR-860L AC1200
D-Link DGL-5500 AC1300
Netgear Nighthawk R700
Miracast Receiver (wireless connection between TV & SHIELD):
Actiontec ScreenBeam Pro SBWD100A
Nyko PlayPad Pro
