Around the web today, various reviewers got to work posting carefully positioned photo’s of the highly anticipated dual GPU solution from AMD, the Radeon HD 6990.
The availability of information was strictly “what you see is what you get”. No juicy details on on the underlying GPUs, technical specs, MSRP or launch date, but its safe to say that with reviewers clearly having cards in hand, and ATI themselves releasing press photos; a rumoured March 8th launch, is easily within the realm of possibility.
The Radeon HD 6990 aims to return AMD to the king the GPU roost, and the card upsizes just about everything. Simple extrapolation of the cards dimensions based on the photos indicate that the HD 6990 will go outside the 10.5″ GPU standard, appearing to be approximately 12-inches in length. It features only a single DVI connector, with 4 display ports allowing for 5 display Eyefinity on a single card. Power is provided by dual 8-pin PCIe connections, indicating a potential power draw of around 300W, but you can expect AMD’s PowerTune technology to keep it all in check.
With rumours about NVIDIA planning it’s own big event at PAX East 2011, possibly related to it’s own dual GPU GTX 590, March 2011 could prove to be one of the biggest GPU powerhouse showdowns of the year.
