After pressure from NVIDIA’s Holiday Game Bundles, AMD has responded with their own by including Battlefield 4 and Thief with some of their R-series graphics cards.
With NVIDIA’s lower prices and extremely aggressive holiday gaming bundles which include up to three A-list titles (not to mention up to $100 off SHIELD for those interested) AMD had to respond in some way. That’s exactly what they’re doing but instead of rolling out a ton of games, the new titles have been carefully selected to highlight AMD’s upcoming feature sets like Mantle and TrueAudio.
Let’s start at the lower end of this initiative and work our way up. The R9 260X will be inducted into AMD’s popular Never Settle Forever Silver Tier which includes two free games. That’s an important move since the 260X was never really considered to be an outstanding value to begin with.
The big news here is the inclusion of the upcoming Thief game into the Silver bundle. This title will incorporate support for both Mantle and TrueAudio, making it a real showcase for all of AMD’s newest technologies. This is actually perfect since other than the R9 290 and R9 290X, the R7 260X is the only card in AMD’s current lineup to support both standards.
Another Mantle-supporting title, the ultra popular Battlefield 4, will be included for free with every card starting from the R9 270 on up to the R9 290X. Again, this is great news but we have to wonder what previous purchasers of the more expensive R9 290X Battlefield 4 Editions will be thinking.
These moves to put AMD on a bit more level footing with NVIDIA’s alternatives and they will hopefully help put Mantle into the hands of more gamers.
