The Seagate’s Momentus Thin is yet another mechanical drive with a unique featuring being that it measures in at a minute 7mm thick compared to the current 9.5 & 12mm standard.
This change should allow for Seagate to become a competitive force in on the Netbook, Nettop and the Slim Notebook (Mac Air, Dell Adamo) market, where SSDs and 1.8in drives have become increasingly popular. “This new slimline product allows our OEM customers to continue to reduce the thickness and weight of their notebook platforms,” says Seagate’s Chief Technology Officer, Robert Whitmore.
The drive is likely to be offered as a single single platter device in 160GB or 250GB capacities and operating at 5400RPM, though 7200RPM speeds are not necessarily out of question.
The drive will make its public debut at CES 2010 in January.
