Seagate launched two storage and streaming centric products at CES today: the Seagate Central and Seagate Wireless Plus.
The Seagate Central is a NAS solution for the home that allows streaming to DLNA compatible devices, such as Samsung Smart TVs. According to press materials, it also ships with an app that allows streaming of content to iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire platforms.
In addition to streaming media, the Central also allows for automatic and continuous backup of connected devices with 2TB, 3TB and 4TB options with price points from $189 to $259.
“This is the ideal backup solution for the family of today, who increasingly have multiple computers, tablets and smart phones,” said Scott Horn, vice president of marketing at Seagate, in a statement.
“We focused on what would make Central easy to use in a home setting. Consumers will find Central storage is easy-to-use as a backup solution with great-looking apps that deliver access to people’s content from the world’s most popular mobile devices, as well as Samsung Smart televisions and Blu-ray players.”
Seagate also launched today the Wireless Plus, a wireless storage media server.
With the wireless plus, one’s entire media collection can be taken with them and streamed to the device of their choice via WiFi. The Wireless Plus has a 1TB hard drive, and Samsung claims it has a 10-hour battery life.
It’s largely an update of the GoFlex Satellite, a product Seagate released in 2011 to mixed reviews. “You can access your content when you are off the grid — in the middle of the desert or on an island in the Pacific Ocean,” Greg Falgiano, a product marketing manager at Seagate, said.
“Smartphones and tablets offer amazing new opportunities for Seagate to provide new consumer storage solutions in an increasingly mobile world,” added Scott Horn, vice president of marketing at Seagate. “Seagate developed the concept of wireless storage to free consumers in order to enjoy their documents, movies, photos and music anywhere in the world, especially when they can’t connect to the Internet.”
The Wireless Plus is scheduled to be released in March. .
