Even though NVIDIA’s Maxwell GPU has yet to be released, the company has announced its next-gen next-generation processor today at the GPU Technology Conference: Volta.
Scheduled to be released in 2016, Volta will introduced stacked DRAM to the GPU market providing users with 1TB/s of memory bandwidth (3 times more than the NVIDIA’s flagship GTX). This is done by stacking the DRAM on top of the GPU, then connecting each layer of DRAM to the GPU with silica substrate.
“Volta is going to solve one of the biggest challenges facing GPUs today, which is access to memory bandwidth. We never seem to have enough!” Jen-Hsun Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, said on stage.
Mr. Huang said that the GPU could transfer all of the data on a blu-ray disc in less than a fiftieth of a second.
More details on Volta are expected later this year.
