AMD Retrofitting Phenom II X4 965 with Lower Wattage

AMD’s Phenom II X4 965 is still their crown jewel, however according to the OverclockersClub, the company is planning on releasing an updated version of the chip which features a TDP lowered from 140W to a more reasonable 125W.

The new chip will be the C3 version, model HDZ965FBK4DGM, as opposed to the old C2 model, HDZ965FBK4DGI. Otherwise the chip is identical, carrying the same 3.4GHz clock speed, 128 KB L1, 512 KB/core dedicated L2 cache and shared 6MB L3 cache.

The only difference is the drop in TDP from 140W to 125W, and given that the CPU is a black edition with unlocked multiplier, this should bode well for achieving higher overclocks.

Pricing is intended to be the same at $196USD

AMD really needs something new. They're getting slaughtered right now.

I disagree. Maybe at the high end where the Core i5 and i7 CPUs exist they're getting slaughtered. However AMD CPUs are doing very well when compared to the Intel Core 2 family. Plus don't forget the unlockable Phenom IIs and cheap Athlon II X4 CPUs.

If there will be a way to get a guaranteed "C3" Ph2-965 then perhaps i'll get one and see if the 4ghz barrier can finally be (easily) conquered. I know some have reached 4ghz with much tweaking and the like, but to remain competitive in this market bracket then they need to be able to hit that magic number with relative ease. Just imagine: Your 4Ghz "Dragon" build could just be a multiplier and a CPU voltage tweak away

I agree with both parties, AMD do a descent job on beating out the Core 2 Quads, but also agree that they need something to compete with the i5/i7.. mainly because, high end AMD has almost nothing to offer and are loosing a lot of business to Intel.. Intel is just dominating the high end of the market, if you can get an i7 750 system built for like $600-800 why bother for an AMD processor..

But releasing tweaked stuff like this, isn't helping them much, waste of time..

You'll be glad to hear that AMD is actually separating this chip from the original. It an entirely different item #.

AMD is re-releasing its Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition. Unlike its larger competitor, who slides in a new core revision like its playing cards, AMD wants to get peoples' attention. There are a few tweaks in the latest upgrade, after all.

AMD does just fine. You're forgetting about the server/workstation market. AMD is huge in this area.

Aren't the Intel CPUs faster and more energy efficient, thanks to the server version of Core i7?

And yes, there's a new part number.

Take if from me if you want, Intel has no quad socket server solution (or greater) in the server market. There's a reason that the biggest server farms and supercomputers in the world use powerpc + opterons ya know
