Possibly jealous of all the attention (and marketing appeal) Intel has received over its “Turbo Boost” technology, AMD is said to be including “Dynamic Speed Boost” with its upcoming Thuban hexa-core processors.
In many facets of computing, speed still reigns supreme, with many programs still unable to take full advantage of all processing cores. With AMD”s upcoming “Thuban” six core processors, the company is looking to include a speed boost technology – currently labelled as “C-sate performance boost” – that offers faster speeds on certain loaded cores, while reducing speeds on unused ones; nearly identical to Intel’s Turbo Boost.
Xbit labs reported this information, citing sources close to the company, and stated that, “the new technology will operate by accelerate single-thread performance when it is needed most, Thuban processors will automatically disable idle cores and overclock the remaining engines to the maximum possible level that is determined by general thermal design power. The technology will be completely hardware-based, hence, will work in any operating system that supports six-core chips.”
If the technology is in fact included with the upcoming processors, it will definitely be an attractive option for users that want to future proof their system, while at the same time have a high performing unit for today’s needs.
