AMD is poised to be releasing its all new 890GX chipset in Q2 2010, marking the slow replacement of the aging 790 series chipsets released over two years ago.
The new chipset is currently built around the AM3 socket, and includes updates for the anticipated Thunban 6-core CPU’s, it is said to also support DDR3 memory up to speeds of 1800MHz through overclocking. It features the updated SB850 southbridge which includes much of the usual, but adds SATA III 6Gb/s to the list; though unfortunately USB3.0 support has yet be seen.
The boards have CrossFireX support, and include onboard DX10.1 capable video at 700MHz utilizing UVD2 (Unified Video Decoder) with support for Hybrid CrossFire.
At CES this past week, a few images of boards from Asus, MSI and ECS were captured.
The board’s rough public debut looks to be April, 2010 so more details are likely to emerge through February and March.
