Scythe and cooling are synonymous. Known for their functional and sometimes eccentric design philosophy; we are greeted once more with another solid solution filling an ever growing niche.

The HTPC market has taken an upturn in recent years. It has allowed many people to build their own custom media centres with features they want. This has of

course created the demand for aftermarket solutions with everything from low profile Video Cards to low profile CPU Cooling Solutions. This is the calling that has made this new Shuriken, a reality.

Standing a mere 58mm tall the Shuriken has managed to shave another 6mm off its previous incarnation. This is thanks in part to another revolution by Scythe. The Slip Stream Slim fan that is mated to this cooler is a full 120mm wide but only 12mm thick. Combining the two together was a great design move on Scythes behalf.

Also changed is the addition of one more heat pipe; which helps to keep the CPU cooler than their last model. The standard features of the Shuriken are there as well; one solid aluminum fin array attached to the base and the other a dense aluminum one that houses the heat pipes.

As with all purpose built coolers this will not be for everyone. But for those who run HTPC or other such customized low profile low noise computers; the latest Scythe has your needs at heart. Pricing at the time of this posting is said to be around $35USD but there is no news to when we will see this hit store shelves.

    Maybe its the pictures, but how the heck do they intend on mounting the unit?

    EE

  • bojangles

    The picture does look deceiving. It looks as though it will hit all of the VRM heatsinks and more importantly the RAM sticks. That looks crazy low…

  • Soultribunal

    It will sit offest over the ram, but it won’t come into contact with ones that have smaller heatspreaders. And that is fine because being downdraft it will provide sufficent circulation over the modules.

    I really don’t have an answer to that one EE, as the unit is not offically released yet its hard to say.

  • ImmaPC

    By the looks of it (to me at least) it doesn’t seem to be very high at all. It’s definitely just as high as your average-sized RAM heatsinks, maybe even your oversized ones…I don’t think this one is going to go over any RAM modules anytime soon.

  • H-F

    Maybe not on DDR2, but on DDR3 which most of them have high heatspreaders…

  • bojangles

    @H-F: So untrue.
