The latest reiteration of Intel’s mini-ITX platform is making a showing at CES with Asus trotting out the first product.
While already featured in the latest Asus EEE PC, the second generation Intel Atom system will now be available for users to custom build their own mini desktops using the Asus AT5NM10-I. The Pine Trail system includes the Intel Atom D510 dual-core processor at 1.66GHz, the new NM10 chipset, and supports DDR2-667. The board features 2 DIMM slots with total support for 4GB, a single PCI expansion slot, two SATA II ports with external connections including 5.1 chan
nel audio, 10/100 Ethernet, four USB 2.0 ports, D-Sub for display along with legacy serial, parallel and PS/2 ports included.
Due to the low power consumption – and therefore low heat production – Asus has combined the CPU and Northbridge cooler into a simple single passive heatsink.
The question remains as to how well the new Intel NM10 chipset will be able to compete with the nVIDIA Ion platform when it comes to media centre and HD playback capabilities.
