Earlier today at a press conference, Amazon unveiled their much-hyped tablet the “Kindle Fire”.
The online retailer has been incredibly tight lipped about the device
refusing to divulge even the minutest details. When grilled about the device by the press, CEO Jeff Bezos gave a “cannot confirm, or deny” type of answer.
The Kindle Fire will feature a 7-inch display and sell for $199 – a bargain compared to the iPad that starts at $499. However, when compared to the iPad the Kindle Fire may seem underpowered: it lacks a camera, microphone, and 3G support, instead only having WiFi. Amazon has confirmed that it will include a 30-day trial for Amazon Prime, which offers which offers unlimited streaming videos and free two-day shipping.
The tablet will be powered by Android, though Amazon was short on specifics.
Amazon also announced that the Kindle Fire would support Amazon’s new cloud-based web browser known as Silk. Silk is different from a traditional web browser because all user requests are sent through Amazon’s EC2 cloud for processing. It supports HTML5, JavaScript, CSS and Flash.
Amazon says the Kindle Fire will ship November 15.
