Police allege that those arrested were involved in transferring proprietary technology from flat screen display maker Samsung Mobile Display to a rival firm.
Both the Korean National Police Agency, and a representative from Samsung Mobile Display refused Hardware Canucks’ requests for comment. Neither the Police nor Samsung Mobile Display will name the rival firm that the technology was allegedly leaked to.
YonHap News says a 46-year-old former researcher at Samsung Mobile Display, whose name is currently being withheld, is alleged to have received 190 million won from an unnamed rival in exchange for leaking trade secrets on “small mask scanning” technology involved in building active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays for large televisions.
Speculation in the blogosphere initially pointed at LG being the destination of this leaked data, though that is unlikely as LG uses WOLED-CF technology which does not require fine patterning.
