This is named Project 2 because a long time ago, I purchased an Areca 1280-ML RAID card with 8x 500GB WD REs. I since abandoned expanding the project pending a case to house this trainwreck. It's currently housed in an Antec 900 with a couple of Startech removable bays.
Since then Cptn Vortex has introduced me to the Supermicro SC846 series case.
Words cannot describe the level of AWESOME!, so here's a link:
Super Micro Computer, Inc. - Products | Chassis | 4U | SC846E1-R900B
Here's my plans:
Phase 1 parts:
-3Ware 9690SA-4I
-SC846E1 Chassis
-24x 1TB WD Blacks (I'm too cheap for REs, since they're WELL over $200 per)
Total parts so far: Chassis is here. RAID is here, 2x 1TB Blacks are here.
Total space: 24TB in RAID6 with (w/ Hot Spare). Estimated 15-18TB usable.
Phase 2:
-Areca 1280ML (check)
-8/24 WD 500GB RE
-SC846TQ (lack of backplane since my RAID card has breakout cables)
Total parts: RAID (check), 8/24 drives, No Chassis
Total Space: 12TB in RAID6 (w/ Hot Spare) with 7-9TB usable. This is a separate unit from the rest of the phases. It's pretty much just meant to recycle existing parts to give them the life they should have had.
Phase 3:
-SC846E1
-24x Best price per GB flavor of the month drives
-Cables to join to Phase 1
Parts so far: None
Estimated Space: 18TB from Phase 1 + 43TB usable (assuming 2TB per) = 61TB
Phases 4 and 5 are to be determined.
At this point, it might be more feasible to invest in newer technologies. If it's still viable to support SATA/SAS, Phase 4 and 5 will continue to do so.
Let the "WTF are you doing with 61TB" and :shok: begin!
EDIT: Obviously there will be pics.
This thread might take a while. 24x 1TB Blacks aren't cheap. Plus I already have 14x 500GB WD SEs and 10x Sammy 1TBs to sell.
Once I sell those, drives will start appearing quick.
