Probably a noob question but what is the purpose of this part?

It replaces the stock top on the MCP350/355 pumps also known as Laing DDC. It greatly improves the flowrate of the pump, though the XSPC acrylic top out performs Petra's.

Unfortunately I don't have any good picture of the pump by itself. This is about the best I have:

Thanks for the pic. So it is used for both better flow and change inlet/outlet one just one benefit/option.

The Laing DDC series of pumps (aka Swiftech MCP350 and MCP355) are great units, but their stock housing really slows them down, especially on the inlet. The aftermarket tops open the pump up and let them work far more efficiently, improving the pressure AND the flow rates right across the board. They also let you choose what size of barbs to use, rather than be stuck with 3/8" sizes.

Right now, XSPC's tops seem to have the edge, but it's not by a huge margin. Pretty much all the tops show a noticeable improvement over the stock configuration.

Thanks for the replies guys...was actually looking at water cooling parts to maybe water cool my HTPC and didn't want a large pump but also did't like the barbs on the 350 and 355's.

I have a 350 with that top for sale ;) And a pa120.2 rad :D
