EK 7970 waterblock WTF 2 Attachment(s) Hey anybody having problems with ek blocks fitting correctly I checked the compatibility it says it will fit so I tried last night had to shave a little plexi off the end so those 6 transistors would fit then realized that square black circled in the picture was in the way took a die grinder and removed more plexi now its all those R22 that are too high . I thought all cards are the same Thanks |
Could be that your card is non-reference design. You can check compatibility here: CoolingConfigurator.com This is reference, which it doesn't seem your card follows: http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/u...-PCB_57194.jpg |
Exactly which Card do you have and exactly which block do you have? Looks like a reference water block and a non reference card. It's a shame you started grinding on it before you checked if it's the right block...... |
do not trust the coolingconfigurator unless it states that it is physically tested... I have no idea how EK tests compatibility visually CAUSE THEY ARE WRONG 80% OF THE TIME. |

What you call transistor are solid choke, the power regulators are the small chips just at the side of the choke on the pic provide by JD , this is why the second thin part of copper his for, too cool them. |
Looks like your card must be a newer revision. All companies do it post-launch to help reduce costs or fix issues with the original design. I would try to return the block if you can... |

& the EK Block is EK-FC7970 CSQ |
EK mention a problem with certain XFX TDFC , "XFX XFX Radeon HD 7970 1000M Black Edition Dual Fan 3GB GDDR5 (FX-797A-TDBC) This card has multiple revisions. Please see: http://www.ekwb.com/news/233/19/New-revision-od-XFX-7970-cards-brings-compatibility-issues/" have a look at this page , you will see the exact same PCB you have and it's not compatible New revision od XFX 7970 cards brings compatibility issues | EKWaterBlocks now you have a 797G and I link a 797A but if you look at the pic of the 797G on EK it'S the one with reference design , you have a new version not reference this is the 797G PCB the block is compatible with http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...psb759ee8e.jpg |
Yeah, sorry man, but you did get a non-ref card and a ref block. Manufacturers don't always list whether or not it is a reference pcb in the card specs. For AMD, a reference PCB will sometimes have the AMD logo visible just above the pcie pins, and typically will have a single fan at the far end of the card. Reference cards will also have the same number and layout of outputs. From the pics on XFX, newegg, and NCIX it is obviously a non-ref card. However on shop.amd.com and pcpartpicker there is a picture of this card with a reference pcb. I am assuming that it was originally reference, then XFX changed the pcb but kept the same model number. This is not an uncommon problem for water cooling, so I always make sure I get a reference card or one that someone already makes a full cover block for. This isn't necessarily EKs fault as I'm sure XFX probably didn't announce the change. Not sure when/where you bought the card and block or whether you can return them, but no one makes a block that will fit your card. EK has this 5870 comparison on their site. http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...erence-PCB.jpg |
