Ive watercooled for years using only distilled water. Ive had leaks (small ones) a few times but as long as you notice it before it soaks everything when it's on, you are good. Water doesnt kill hardware as easy as people think, I mean if you can bench with your GPU in this condition...

I read a review about a week ago comparing four liquids, and distilled water + water wetter. The distilled water had the best temps overall. Second came Feser One, which was actually non conductive (not like most others which say it, but aren't). The reviewer even splashed it on his motherboard and videocard while it was running just to see, and he wiped it off with no negative effects. FluidXP was actually rated the worst out of them all, and because it was a bit thicker than the rest, it also made the pump run a bit louder. So if you want fancy colours and 100% non-conductiveness (not really a word :() Feser One is the best choice. But if all you want is the lowest possible temperatures, go with distilled water and water wetter.
I'll see if I can find the review again.

Augh! To the people using alcohol and bleach in their loops: CEASE AND DESIST!!

These can break down seals in things like blocks and reservoirs. Switch to something non corrosive TODAY. I recommend water and iodine in low concentration (for purifying drinking water while camping: can be had for $5 at the pharmacy)

Anyone have any idea how regular food colouring would work to add some colour too a loop?

Alot of people seem to use it, so I really don't think it can hurt, though you still should add something to kill stuff that grows and will attack you in your sleep.
