Installing H100 on Rampage IV Extreme X79 Motherboard
 

Hi i'm just installing my h100 on an Asus rampage IV extreme motherboard. My question is in linus's video he takes off the stock backplate which is installed out of the box on the back of the motherboard and installed the extra backplate that comes with the motherboard, but he never says why. i'm just wondering why he did that and if it's necessary? here's a link to the video LGA2011 Intel Core i7 CPU Installation Guide H100 Water Cooler Linus Tech Tips - YouTube

because when you use the original one the H100 won't seat onto the cpu properly. if you use the original back plate and then mount the h100 to the cpu the screws will tighten up tight but there still is play in between both the cpu and the h100 cooler. I hope I explained this properly.

So should i install the second backplate that came with my motherboard?

after watching seems reviewer didn't ( read manual .pdf ) do home work on intel stand off's, looks manual shows use 2011 stand off

IMHO I'd use the back plate to keep the solder where to be when working temps

do test mount without thremal paste to check clearance using supplied stand offs

in video looks if was a heat speader on backside of MB

the CROSS yes if not supplied use the corsair Cross

YES this is the second backplate (heatspreader) i received but it was not installed on the motherboard, There is a different one installed currently on the board when i received it. it was a little bit bigger and it filled in the holes around that heat spreader in the picture. but i'm wondering should i install that head spreader in the picture or stay with my current one that came with the board?

what MB we talking ? 2 heatspeader supplied with MB ? use one that threads hold WB if not use Cross

yes thats ok it will supercede cross that back plate

i think i figured it out. i was following the steps in the video when i now realize that his motherboard has a frontplate rather than a backplate, where as the asus rampage IV extreme doesn't have the same "frontplate" so i just followed the steps of corsair and my motherboard and its fine thanks anyways.:biggrin:

The Rampage IV Extreme has 2 backplates because it will fit both LGA1366 and LGA2011 coolers.
