Kill coil question
 

Wondering if a UV light or a black light can replace kill coils or silver.

I heard UV light degrades the tubing, so I'd be more worried about that.

if you are referring to those black lights for uv tubing, it wouldnt be powerful enough.

The ones that are powerful can also be dangerous and they are often used for short durations to kill bacteria.

Bottomline, I think its a bad idea must as well get a silver kill coil as it is passive and harmless.

One of the reaons I was wondering is UV is used for filtration systems. Those lights are sheilded tho.

Can UV degrade Acrylic reservoirs?

Yeah as other have said...it aint gonna work. I have a UV filtration system for my homes water. The UV box is 4 feet long (i went with the "small" one as I have a multi-pass filtration and seperate RO setup...so the UV was more just for overkill)...AND the UV tube has to be replaced every couple years as it degrades with time in potency.

IMHO...spend the 7 bucks and pick up a kill coil from daz or any of the other wc'er stores. Passive, easy to install...and never needs to be replaced. :)

What about something like PT_Nuke? Is that an effective replacement?

Effective replacement yes. But the appeal of silver is that it becomes more potent over time, where additives may loose their potency and just pure water and silver will not gunk up water blocks in any way, some additive will leave a film after a while.
