A water gpu only block?
Hi guys,

I was considering to get into watercooling primarily only for my GPUs. I have a Noctua NH-12UP which is more than capable of cooling my i7 and I am not into aggressively overclocking it anytime (the Noctua fans are also dead silent) so I don't really need it for the CPU.

The only thing that is loud in my case is the video card and after a few days of it with the fans at 80%-90% with a household fan trying to cool them, I think I am going to go crazy. If you haven't seen my other thread, I am running three Sapphire 5850 Xtreme non reference cards. Here is how they look:



One of the fans has already bit the dust :angry2: (I bought it from Direct Canada, no idea how the RMA process is with them). As these are cheap cards, I don't want to spend $100+ for each of them to have a full block but I wouldn't mind buying a water block only for the GPU. These seem to be much more affordable and I could at least install them on future cards.

My question is, is this feasible and would the other parts of the card need any additional heating (i.e. ram heatsinks) and could those be removed when I sell the cards?

Otherwise, I really am out of a solution to keep three of these cooled without the noise being ridiculous.

Edit: I think I will just sell these cards and settle for two 6970s instead as the costs end up being cheaper than trying to cool these cards.

Trying to water cool non-reference cards is difficult (seems especially difficult with AMD cards); as the cards' GPU core designs are completely different from reference.
You could install a universal waterblock, then add RAM heatsinks...but this probably not what you're looking for; there is still the possibility of water cooling the HD6970's you're thinking of purchasing, one place to go to get an idea of which waterblock to purchase is here CoolingConfigurator.com then go to dazmode.com to get the best deals in Canada DazMode, Canadian PC Water Cooling and Modding Store you can also email Daz directly for more information.

In my system I have a 120.2 rad connected only to my GPU and NB. It is a very good way of cooling your GPU (with our without the NB). However, I always use reference cards so I can use full coverage blocks.

Yes, universal blocks work. I've used them before. You will need ramsinks, and they can be removed when it's time to sell the card, unless you use thermal epoxy. You'll also need some airflow over the cards to carry away the heat from the ramsinks.

I've used DD Maze 4's and 5's and Swiftech's GPU blocks before. Really, any one will do, as long as you have decent flow in your loop.

Thanks for the help guys but I think I am going to stay away from watercooling for now. Since really the only issue with heat in my case is from the GPUs, spending $300-400 on a watercooling setup for 5850s would probably be better spent on something like two 6970s instead. I had to RMA one of the cards as the fan started to choke and checking out the temps in the case with only a Crossfire setup is fairly good so I probably won't need it also for a Crossfire setup of 6970s.

Bump! So I have decided to go with three 5870s instead, lol! One of them is an Asus EAH5850 v2 that uses a blower/exhuast system, one of them is not reference and not a blower design, and the third one will likely not be a reference design either.

I am thinking about cooling two of the video cards (definately not the reference one and a toss up between which one overclock better or gets hotter in the case). My case space is looking like this now:


So there is definately not alot of room to put stuff. Any suggestions for this? Once again, all I need is a GPU loop. Also, can someone link me to heatsink spreaders that can removed after install (or do I assume this for all except if they are thermal epoxy?

I was thinking about having my radiators mounted to the back of the case (outside) and having the pump inside the bottom of the case.

Do you guys think 3X120MM radiator will be sufficient enough to drop two 5870s temps into the low 60s/high 50s when mining at full load?
