Default one of mcp355 is burned

i bought dual mcp355 with ek res v2 from 3.0charlies about one month ago...

but just stress the computer a few days for leaking test... until i pick up my 2209wa lcd from my brother at last week, i start to transfer from old hdd to new hdds+ssd... play mafia and beginning of just cause 2... and sometime watch movie or read manga...

i dont leave the new computer on overnight because i am afraid that water leaking might be coming out... but temperature is good... average 35 for two gpu and 55 for i7 950... only aircooling northbridge seem too hot (just touch it)

today, i smell something funny and burning and check on my crt, old and new computers... then i dont find... so i want to wait more and see... finally something smells so bad... i shut down all devices and inspection and i discover that one primary is burned out...

this pictures explain a lot... so what do you think?

- just mcp355 is bad and need rma it if it still under the warranty?
- aluminum sheet is bad idea
- aluminum + on the psu is really bad idea?

its good time... tomorrow, i have to disassemble the computer for paint... so i will open mcp355 and find out... i really hope 3.0charlies has his reciept...

ncix dont carry mcp355... just mcp350 but i can do mod tho... i am worrying that it will void the warranty... :\

My System Specs

That is most definitely one of the most nasty burns I've yet to see. That could have done some real damage to the rest of the PC.

Unhappy

Is the reservoir a top or did you use one if not? If so, it is more than likely user error- It is very easy to not install the O-ring + top correctly. The result is water slowly leaking in and causing the pump to burn like in your picture. Also, those pumps run hot- specifically when over volted. I have heard 70-90c. It is really not a good idea to use those pumps unless you have a loop with a lot of resistance. For low resistance loops the MCP 655 is the better choice, because the large hub keeps the pump cool.

you should see like this

Swiftech MCP355 pump catches fire. (sort of) - XtremeSystems Forums

MCP355 dead after 12 days - XtremeSystems Forums (i think it will be going on my second one too... i mean i notice there a small light black spot at exactly same area)

i am sure that i installed the top on the pump correctly... no leaking... see this thread; water in res tube ...

overvoltage? how?

btw customize case at first customize case with gen3 i7 system ... will update when the paint is done... and acrylic panel too...

i do have mcp 655... but i dont like its barb plus extra swiftech res v1 /barb/tube will make the case more crowd...

How do you think those tops increase performance (flow and head pressure). I have seen the MCP 355 with XSPC top run at ~ 23 watts 5 watts above stock. Low reaistance increase the flow. For the most part, the higher flow translates into more watts being used. As simple as the task is, it is possible to make a mistake. It happens to the most experienced. You would never know untill you smell the pump burning. Pump tops for DC 3 simply kill pumps- either from water leaking inside or from running the pump above the stock settings.

Most of my info has come from experience and or the XS forum. There have been several attemps to collect data on the issue of pump tops but people refused to post basic information about their there setup, so the thread(s) were deleted. Don't qoute me on this, but I believe martin has had issues with a pump top installed incorrectly. There is definitly a correlation between DC 3 pump tops and the death of pumps. Remember, correlation does not imply casualty, but in my opinion, those pump tops kill pumps. DC 3 pumps are great for restrictive loops because they keep a decent flow rate without consuming more wattage then intended. Koolance makes a heatsink for the pump for around 40, but there is no evidence to support it. The heatsink also increases dBA making the pump noisy without the use of foam.

i see... thats interesting information... what if some without top is dead... can you also explain it?

anyway i notice that one mcp 355 is made in 23/10 (dead but i dont know if its really oct 23) and other is one 11/08... 3.0charlies said he use it on his folding computer...

if you said that these pump is good for high-restriction loop then its not suitable to my computer... then should i low the rpm with speedfan software.. like 2000 rpm? if its not working then i guess that i will need to design my own reservoir for mcp655 with speed adjuster that i still have...

edit: i will get mcp350 from ncix and do mod anyway...
