Need to mix liquid that will look like oil or rust.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about mixing few dyes to make liquid that will look like machine oil or rust.

Anybody knows what the base colors for that? Yellow and Green with drop of Red?

Red and green should get you a brown colour.

Maybe play with some food colouring to get some ideas?

If you mix red and green automotive antifreeze you get a rust colour.

I don't think you will be able to achieve the look you are going for, because it's not a color that's associated with rust, it's both the color and the texture. Short of painting the tubes, mixing dyes will only give solid colors.

For example, this is a solid pane of rust color:



When you show people the first color only a very small percentage of them will associate it with rust. However show them any of these photos: (linked due to size)

And they will instantly think "rust!".

I think a viable option might be to start with some bright UV tubing, and then paint splotches onto it so that when the UV light is turned on only parts of the tubing light up. (Also use a very dim UV source). Maybe UV Red with black paint? I'm just throwing ideas out, they might look horrible.

Any mixture of dyes/additives is just asking for trouble...

Make sure you test it before actually deploying this in a loop. I can pretty much guarantee some kind of sediment will form in the solution if you start putting two (or heaven forbid) three+ dyes & such together.

That is part of my experiment. That will be a shoker if nothing happens.

I can ship you my older Swiftech 220 rad/res if you want.... judging by what it looks like through the fill hole, all you'd need is some clear distilled water for an authentic rust colour...... ;)
