I think what MM is talking about is actually Type water that is de-ionized and ultra Pure. That is unsafe to drink as it will physically leech minerals from a human body. Otherwise distilled water is okay, but not generally recommended to drink.

If you sweat out all your electrolytes and you don't replace them then you're going to be in trouble. No tap water is going to replace the amount of electrolytes you sweat out, either.

... that's why I drink Brawndo.

Some percentage of our daily consumption of these minerals and ions come from our drinking water, but most of them come from the food we eat, making DI water perfectly fine to drink if one has food in his or her system.
The good quality food we eat is what gives us the minerals we need, and purified water is what removes the pollutants we don't need.

More people die from dirty water than could or would ever die from distilled.

Distilled water, with about 1-14 parts per million contaminants, is rated by the National Science Foundation as the purest source of water. This is the same water you put in your iron and your car battery! It's funny that distilled water has been around forever and is the cheapest, yet most of you do not drink it. In fact, distilled water is all anti-aging specialist Dr Michael Colgan (of the Colgan Institute) will drink. I have trained many athletes that drink one to two gallons of distilled water every day.

I am commonly asked about the mineral content of distilled water. It is a commonly held belief that distilled water leeches minerals from your bones and teeth because of osmotic pressure. This is a myth made up by smart marketers of spring and mineral water to increase sales! Any basic college text will reassure you that the human system does not work that way. If it did, your cells would be at the mercy of all the varying osmotic gradients created in your gut by every meal you eat. Remember too that the purpose of drinking water is hydration, not to supply minerals. You obtain minerals from food and supplementation. Distilled water is absolutely pure and clean and is the best source of water you can put into your body.

I think that pure water does act as more of a diuretic then a harder water, which helps empty you of electrolytes quicker... but that's the limit

^^^^^^^^^^ thank you Perineum

Yuppers, but if you touch lab ultra pure water, you may quench your thirst and destroy your body.

Water moves under the principle of Osmosis. Water will flow from the area of high concentration of water to an area of low concentration of water.

(IE: drinking distilled water will hydrate you better)

When used with a permeable membrane (your intestines) pure water will move into your body because the salts *in* your body make the solution there a low concentration of water.

This is also why you don't drink sea water. The low concentration of water and high concentrations of salts in sea water will make drinking sea water actually dehydrate you, as the water in your body is more pure, and therefore will move to the intestines where it is less pure water (and more solutes)

Also, since the water is pure, it is absorbed by the body a LOT faster and can cause cramps, discomforts and what not to some people. That's why it's not recommended to drink.
