I have quite a few people who report improvement in temps. I'm actually almost ready to overcome my own laziness and put one in. The installation hassle turned me away from the beginning, but customers keep telling that it worth it.

Basically I'm in the same boat as OP. Bad mount can cost as much as 5c and the only way to know is to make several mounts with burn test to be sure, which is just as much hassle. No easy life for computer enthusiast... eh?

Maybe I just apply paste well? I don't know. I apply my MX-3 in a line down the center about 3/4 the length of the CPU, then put the block down as squarely as possible and a little twist before I make the screws entirely snug. I surely didn't see a 5C drop. Maybe 1-2C tops.

And yes, I did the burn-in process correctly. I saw it peak at 100C or whatever then quickly drop to 80ish.
