I find that I always bugger up the threads when I cut screws shorter, so here's a handy tip if you are cutting machine screws down. Thread a nut on first, spin it down below where you want to cut. Cut your screw to length, then spin the nut off, and you won't have any problems starting the nut back on your shortened screw again.

Well I just called the closest Fastenal store to me and they don't have any in stock. I just realized you can check online also for stock if you set a specific store as your default one and all the Toronto locations don't carry any 6-32 2-1/2"! I also checked Home Depot and they only have 2" in stock as well...

I'm getting desperate here lol, if Rona doesn't pan out I'm just going to order online from Fastenal

Edit: Phoned Rona no dice...

Another option would be to buy a long 6-32 threaded rod, cut to lengths, then use nuts/washers at each end.

Using a washer underneath the fan, next to the radiator might be a tad difficult to install. gs

Wouldn't be a problem at all... that end of the rod would be threaded into the rad.... ;)

That said, I didn't see any 6 - 32 rod at the local hardware store. I did however find these (apparently hard to find in 3" lengths) packages of 5 in my local Kent (home depot only had 2").

Manufacturer's name: Hillman
Manufacturer's part#: 126371
Manufacturer's Bar Code#: 08236 88441

Unfortunately, I believe Kent is an Irving subsidiary, and as such is probably not available East of La Belle Province.

Man you're awesome sswilson

You're right though, I don't think there are any Kent stores in Ontario. Did you get my PM btw?

But yeah just wanted to say thanks again for going the extra mile to help me out!!!

edit: typos

Yep... already in the envelope waiting for a trip to the post office in the AM. We'll see if they charge me more than a normal 52 cent stamp. ;)
