Default Cooling Dual X5355's.....HOT suckers!

Hey all, I'm working on a current build right now. It's quite the machine. Dual Quadcore X5355 2.66GHZ cpu's, 16GB RAM, Dual 8800GT in an Antec P190. Quite the sweet system. We were going for as silent as possible with such a beast, so threw on a pair of Thermalright HR-01 - X coolers. The heatsinks are massive, had to remove the giant side fan, as well as the Dustfilter/fan bracket to get the side panel on! Anyway, running 8 instances of Prime right now (that was a pain to get started!) and with the fans on low, I was hitting mid 90's across all cores! Yikes! I now have the fans on medium and it seems to have leveled off at about 75 degrees. Also, I checked Intel's spec on this CPU, and it seems the Vcore range should be from 1.16-1.2V, but this Supermicro board seems to be feeding it a steady 1.35V, and there is NOwhere in the BIOS to make changes to that.

Any ideas?? Am I safe??? We're talking about 2 x $800 CPU's here!!!

First and foremost, this thread needs pics.

Second, that's wayyyyyy tooooooo hot! Is this at stock speeds? Are you sure it's 75C and that the Vcore is 1.35V? Make sure you have good contact between the CPUs and HSFs, double check the BIOS, raise the fan speed to the max and check the temps again.

Yeah, I can post some pics. Don't have my camera here at work today though, will have to wait till monday. Anyway, it is 75 with the fans on medium. The heatsinks are on right, (btw those thermalrights are a B*TCH to install on a Dual socket board, seriously...) and there is good contact. I'm still going to re-seat it today. See if I can't get some better results.

Ok, just zip tied 2 x 120mm 1200RPM scythe Slipstreams to both heatsinks, in push/pull config, and it brought the load temps down to 64 per core, on the hottest cores. The other cores are mid 50's. That is with all case fans on low! This thing is a beast! Can't wait to take pics hehe. Also want to try a run of 3DMark06....

Now that is one freakin' sweet rig

Obviously watercooling those CPUs would be a good idea.

I would watercool it if I could, but it is not my computer, oh well. Lucky SFU gets it instead.

Why would a Uni need such a powerful computer like that? Do they have some sort of gaming course where you play games all day?

ok... 8 instances of Prime95? You might as well take those chips out to the alley and beat them with a hose for a while too. Do you expect this box to need to do that kind of work in production?

Also, is it a workstation or a server? Servers under that kind of load are expected to scream like banshees to cool properly.

The question as to why it needs to 8800GTs since it'll be going to a Uni has me.

Well, the main purpose is to do repetitive simulation exercises that eat tons of RAM and take many days. Mainly mathematics. And it needs to be silent, which I have accomplished! Also, the dual 8800GT's are for his 3 x 30" monitors..... Yeah, pretty sweet.
