core i5 750 + hd 5970 water cooling build [in the process of ordering]
 
So I'm thinking about setting up water cooling for my i5 750 and hd 5970. I currently have the i5 750 oc'd to 4.01ghz and my hd 5970 to 950/1300.

I'm thinking about getting this kit: Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultima XT Universal CPU Liquid Cooling Kit - DirectCanada and this gpu block: NCIX.com - Buy Ek Water Blocks EK-FC 5970 Nickel Plated Full Cover Radeon HD 5970 GPU Block G1/4 - 3831109835142 In Canada..

My question is, will the stock rad be enough to handle the heat produced by the cpu and gpu or would I have to get a bigger rad?

Also, if possible I would greatly appreciate it if someone could put together a list of parts along with prices for a custom WC setup. Thanks!

Here's my system specs:

CPU: core i5 750
GPU: hd 5970
RAM: g.skill ripjaws 2x2gb
MB: asus p7p55d-e pro
PSU: seasonic m12d 850w
CASE: CM HAF 922

I've decided on the parts to get and here they are:


Pump: Swiftech MCP655
RES: Swiftech MCRES MICRO Rev 2
CPU Block: EK Supreme HF [ordered]
GPU Block: EK FC 5970 Nickel Plated Plexi [ordered]
Tubing: Swiftech 7/16" ID [ordered]
Barbs: Bitspower G3/8 1/2" (if I get thermochill rad), Bitspower G1/4 1/2" x 4 [ordered]
RAD: Thermochill PA120.3 [ordered]
Additive: Swiftech Hydrx water additive [ordered]
FANS: 2xNoctua P12 [already have], 1xYate loon D12SL-12 [ordered]

Total cost: $489 :bleh:

I would not use it but i do not know how much heat the i5 750 makes go with a triple

That Swiftech rad will not even be close to enough. I would say it is almost not enough for the i5 at 4GHz. It is a thin rad. Most other rads like the HWL SR-1, Feser, EK, XSPC rads are twice as thick. Im thinking that it would be enough for the 5970, but not both!

The XSPC rads are fairly widely acknowledge as the current top dogs.

If you are planning on a Heavy Overclock and WCing your mobo and GPU, 1 XSPC RX360 would be the LEAST I would even consider trying. I have never looked into that case, but if it were me and I was looking for such an aggressive overclock, I would look at fitting a 4x120 OR a 3x120 on the CPU/MOBO and a 2x120 on the GPU.

The D5/swiftech655 is a good pump. Quiet and good flow rate, especially with an aftermarket top. Tubing and fittings of your choice. 1/2" ID recommended over 3/8" though.

That's your job, and half the fun of a build like this ;) Besides, without a budget, it's tough to provide advice. You're probably looking at anywhere from $400-$800 for your setup depending on the quality of components you want to run... rad(s), pump(s), pump top(s), fittings, tubing, reservoir and water blocks.

As you can see buy the link dustin1706 posted, brands make very little difference in terms of performance.

Why the eff would someone spend $800 on watercooling. :shok:
He can easily get a system for under $400. That will work great. If he looks around for used gear he could spend even less.

Will be able to handle your setup w/ medium speed fans I'd think. People always under estimate how much a radiator can take if you crank up the fans.

My loop is getting up there. It isnt cheap. I have said this before, but I know a guy who is running $1100 worth of radiators in one computer, and a $350 pump. :shok:


Don't buy that EK pump, its a gross Danger Den rebranding. Ewww! A rebranded DD pump :bleh:

And you get what you pay for with Swiftech rads. You pay $50 for something that when you sneeze on, all the paint falls off.

I have been pricing out my upcoming build, and for a very good dual loop D5 setup I am looking at ~500USD. Bear in mind that this is for an excessive setup that will likely last through several builds.
