Question Air cooling for E6400

Quick question regarding air cooling: I have the E6400 running @ 3.36, with 54C loaded using F@H. I know I can push even more, in the 3.6-3.7 range - the limiting factor being the Arctic Freezer 7 sitting on top of it. At those speeds and temps, it's out of its league.

I've selected 2 HSFs, one being in special with the Sponsor sale @ NCIx, the Tuniq 120:

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...7&promoid=1056

and this one I found @ DC:

Thermalright ULTRA-120 Extreme 6 Heatpipe Cooler LGA775 Heatsink *Fan Not Included* - DirectCanada

The Ultra-120 will using the Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F 120MM Cooling Fan 1600RPM 28.0DBA 63.7CFM.

Which one should I choose?

John

Whichever you can afford.

The Ultra pulls ahead by a few degrees but nothing major and it also comes down to size.

The Tuniq is MASSIVE and the Ultra is big but not near as big as the Tuniq.

I have the Tuniq on my e6600 and its running at 3.4ghz @ 1.4v and it idles around 45 degrees

Price is not an issue - I've quit smoking and I'm buying myself a gift.

Size is also not an issue, since it will be installed on HSPC test bench.

I'm checking out the IFX-14 with its backplate cooler (Ultimate CPU Cooling Solutions! USA) and I'm wondering if it would be a good buy since there is hardly no space between the bench surface and the board.

I've done a few subjective readings on the IFX-14 and it doesn't perform as well as the Ultra 120 and if its going to be on a test bench you might want to look at something like the Ultra 90 which is smaller than the 120 but works as well or go for something like the Zalman 9700.

The Ultra 120 Xtreme is really an amazing cooler, and definitely worth the price premium. I have it, and also have a Scythe ninja, and the build quality between the two is immense. The Thermaltake is so solid, so perfect. They obviously take care in the design and build. Plus, there is a massive amount of heatpipes there. It is really an amazing sight.

Right now I get load temps of about 68-72 when ambient is in the mid 20's. I use a Antec Tricool 120mm fan on medium on the Cooler, cause they Yates won't mount. Keep in mind I lapped my CPU, whick did drop my temps about 2-3 degrees.

The only thing I can really compare this cooler too is the stock cooler, which, @2.67GHZ, UNDERVOLTED to 1.2V, was hitting 78-80 on load.

Thanks for the info. I went with the IFX-14 for 2 reasons: 3 fans (Scythe Sflex SFF21E, for a quiet set-up) and the backplate cooler as part of the package. I'm concerned with the heat build-up since the board is resting straight on the top section of the HSPC bench test (though I did add a couple of .098" rubber washers to allow some airflow).

We'll see how it compares with the AF7Pro.
