Palit Radeon HD 4870 Sonic Dual Edition

Anybody ever heard of that card before ??? Found it here @ 268$.
I was thinking of Xfiring it with my 4870x2...

I've been seeing it around lately, looks like a decent card, interesting cooler - don't know much more about it.

I should have one in my hands in the upcoming weeks.

In my hands now, will post up pics later, and bench over the weekend...

Not a bad price, let us know how it clocks dave.

Heh. For sure. Have to dump the kids off for the weekend, and then clocking and MGS4 all weekend...also tried to see if NCIX is shipping E0 E8400's...haven't the chance to open the shipping box yet and see...:angry2:

So, I've spent the last 4 hours today playing with the card, installing drivers, running vantage, swapping bios, running vantage, clocking, running vantage...:help:

The card is quite loud...louder than 4870x2. :ph34r:Too loud...the smaller fan seems to be spinning at about 3500rpm...no fluctuation in fan speed from idle to load.

On the driver disk is "VTune", which allows clock and fan speed adjustments...well, allows fan speed adjustments...for the larger fan only, it seems, which goes from 50%(default), to 100%(Just damn noisy). No temp monitoring really done with fanspeed adjustment, Max temp seen so far on "Turbo" bios is 63c.

Out of the box, besides the displayport, this card offers nothing more over a regular 4870 except more noise, for a gamer.

CCC max on default bios is 790/950, card fully stable("Turbo" normal clocks are 775/1000, default is 750/900). "Turbo" bios provides 790/1100, card fully stable. Memory latency does not seem to change between bioses, but further testing is needed.

Vtune offers 813 for gpu, regardless of bios, but CCC overrides this. Have not yet tried to use just Vtune, and leave CCC uninstalled...more to follow on that.

That being said, from Vantage performance, sometimes even single 4870 surpasses dual 3870x2's...having only really played with my 4870x2's, I was not fully sure this was the case, but tonight has done nothing but confirm that 4870 singlecard seems a far better choice than dual 3870x2's, even if the cost was the same. :censored:

I've havent even started to really explore this card yet though. Only playing with CCC, so we'll see if this card's modified power section pays off on clocking...

Soon.
:canadianwave:

Thanks for all your replies ( and thank you for taking the time to let us know your testing results Dave ) I haven't made up my mind yet... maybe I'll just wait a little bit more... gotta learn to be more patient, it's only been like around a month since I got my 4870x2, for god sake  !

Well, I should add that if you plan on buying this card and changing cooler, you definately will void warranty(first time seeing this on a vga!!!):censored::
