My 4850 is watercooled and volt modded. Running 820/1150 and beating 4870's.

correct. There were no volt mods available for the 4870's when I made my purchase.
Got my 4850 for $169 and swapped the waterblock/ramsinks off my 8800 gts.

Actually I looked more closely, and its not that close, lets say 3dmark06, a 4850CF in low resolutions scores almost 3000 points more than a single 4870, in COD4 it scores almost over 80fps.

It all depends on if you plan on upgrading your monitor or not..
From what I have read on various forums and reviews the ATI and Nvidea cards run about the same on smaller monitors like 19" when you get up to 24"+ the ATI cards scale better at the higher resoultions..

I went with Sugar's advice and just settled for a 4870 and an EK full cover block.

well for that res I would have suggested the GTX 280 because in the majority of games it beats the 4870 but a fair amount at lower res.

GTX280 is the best for a single GPU card hands down, you'd need to CF a ATI card or get a dual ATI card to beat it.
