Nothing wrong with it IMO. I have the same sound from both the HD4870X2 cards I have here and one has been running almost nonstop every night for the last month. Wann hear squealing? Install a 9600GT....screams like a tortured pig.

Seriously?
Wow... I don't know what to do then. If it's normal it's normal, but to me it sounds like an electronic components about to Fail. Does the GTX 280 make the same sound? Maybe I have sensitive hearing but the sound of this 4870x2 scares me enough to play with headphones on and the volume loud...

It has been mentioned before but some of the ATI and Nvidia cards make a higher pitched whining which won't be detected by many males. Females on the other hand and some males (myself included) along with teenagers have their hearing attuned to a broader range of sounds which includes some higher frequencies. This is what you are hearing.

I have heard it from time to time on nearly every modern GPU.

Wow, okay then. Concerns eased. THanks Skymtl. Anyways, if something does happen to it i have the Visiontek lifetime warranty. hehe. Now time to upgrade everything else to get rid of the bottleneck.

I confirm what he said, since this is my case too.

I also confirm that both GTX 280s in my possession have the same noise.

It's interesting actually how the noise depends on the load to the GPU(s). 3DM'06 is the only thing that has caused the noise to be that "loud". Oblivion produced the same noise but at a much lower level, and everything source-based (CS:S, Dod:S, TF2) make even less noise. Very strange. Anyways, I guess it'll soon time to FS the rest of my stuff. As for bottleneck benchmarks, I think my system is a fairly good example = With 2x 8800 GTS' =11k in 3DM06, with a 4870 X2 = 12k... Obviously I'm being severly limited by processor, ram or motherboard - Expect a new FS thread soon folks! lol.

Staring at your picture, I have to agree with you...you are getting old
That being said, I too can only ear the fan speeding up

It's undeniable that you are limited by those components... Look at my scores...first one is with my 8800gtx, and then, hd4870x2...woot !!!

@CraigHf & Dr_BenD_over: Which brands of 4870X2 do you have? I'm still not convinced that I should "just get used" to this sound because it is a very loud sound that can be clearly heard (at least by me) over the 10x-12x fans in my system...

mine is an HIS... and to be honest with you, I'm not sure if you should "only get used to it" like you've said. But did you ask the compagny support about it ? Maybe you should try that and see what they have to say...

EDIT: I just launched COD4 to be sure of what I was saying about only hearing the fan speeding up, and I must say it's maybe a little more than that... I can hear a whining sound over my coolit freezone elite, so I have to say that what you hear may very well be normal...finally
