Oh great...I remember the DFI X38 (and X48) boards had issues with the 3870X2, and I don't know if they were ever solved. Now the HD4870X2 has issues as well?

Hopefully DFI will come out with a bios update. Id heard about this issue with the 3870X2 after buying my board. Since people were running cf 4870's ok on it I just thought why not just go that route. More expensive and perhaps less powerful but there you go.
Besides 2 4870's look better than 1 4870X2

Any issues will have a seperate section in the review discussing workarounds.

Thats good to know SKY.

I like this approach to the reviews where you provide additional information on how to get your goodies up and running

The first thing that went through my mind, after reading about the DFI/4870X2 issue, was:
"two 4870s would fill out my case better, though, compared to one 4870X2.."

Excellent review SKY and unlike many other articles, I read this through completely (unlike others; scan intro, results and conclusion). I was really looking to see whether you noted temps as an issue with these cards and on pp.16, Performance Analysis, I note that the cards are still at around 74-75C with only 16-20% Fan speed with 0% load (looks like they had been idling for 1-2mins maybe? So these temps still seem high and may be tending outside a comfort zone for many. Have you heard anything from ATi reps into what are safe or optimal operating temp ranges for prolonged periods. It's just that many in the broader community are concerned about the potential longevity of this series under those temp ranges.

Unfortuantely, due to time constraints I tested in my open tech station and not in a case so getting accurate temperature reading that would be of use to 99% of the people out there was not possible.
