Hmmmm... ATTN: HD48XX owners.

I have my 4850 on watercooling now. Got the core at 1.28 volts. Stable at 740/1050mhz.

Thing is, the benchmarks are just not scaling at all with the upped core speed. I am getting like a 3-5% increase on my benches across the board with an 18% jump in core. It actually falls flat after 680mhz. Very little gain.

Am I CPU bound? Q6600@3.6.

I've benched Mass Effect, Bioshock, CoD4, Crysis and Lost Coast. Lost Coast should not be cpu bound.

I'm starting to think these cards are memory bound. as 3-5% is all I've been able to overclock the GDDR3. This would explain the boost in the 4870 too.

Time to volt mod the VDIMM and up the memory clocks.

Overclock very rarely equal much real world performance difference.

Eldonko July 30, 2008 08:09 AM

Yeah a GPU oc is only part of it, with CPU/mem at same speed, the % gain with GPU oc will be limited.

yamawho July 30, 2008 08:15 AM

I agree, video overclock is not worth the effort.

I noticed that you ran Mass Effect ... did you experience severe frame rate drop at times ?

Squeetard July 30, 2008 08:25 AM

Thing is, my 8800GTS scaled very well with a core boost.

I'm playing around in RTHDR-IBL right now and I am starting to think this card is memory bound. Even at 625mhz(stock) Changing the memory speed gives me an equal change in FPS. Clock it to 720 and the fps does not change until I up the memory.

yamawho, I have played mass effect on this comp in XP32, XP 64 and Vista 64 and have not experienced any slowdowns or hitches. In fact this game is my only title to run as good in Vista 64 as it does in xp 32.

I am going to volt mod the memory now and clock it up, will report.

Straight from the dvd or did you apply the 1.01 patch ?

Squeetard July 30, 2008 08:50 AM

running the 1.01 patch

I ran some benches with the crysis _gpu test. 1920*1200 with my custom cvars.

Increases are as expected. Does not look like this card is memory bound. More like most modern games are somewhat CPU bound even Crysis. My actual gameplay increases are not this good.

Also, as we knew. A gpu or clock increase only yields about 1/3 gain in real world performance.

Whats with ATI cards and 3DMark 06? I scored 15,200 with my 8800 GTS and only get 13,800 with my 4850 (both max stable overclocks) yet the 4850 smokes the 8800 in every other bench, including 3DMark vantage. 4850 gets 8200 and the 8800 gets 6800 in vantage. Was there some payouts and optimizations going on in 06?
